Bastle House is a charming, historic cottage in the heart of Haltwhistle, praised for its character, spaciousness, and excellent location close to shops, pubs, and Hadrian’s Wall. Guests appreciate the well-equipped kitchen, cosy log burner, and comfortable bedrooms. The property is ideal for walkers and families, with many local amenities nearby. While most found the cottage clean and welcoming, a few noted minor maintenance and cleanliness issues, and parking is not directly outside but is conveniently available nearby. Occasional thoughtful touches from the host have been appreciated, though these are not guaranteed.
Most guests found the cottage clean, tidy, and well-presented, with several describing it as spotless. However, a few reviews mentioned cobwebs, dust, blocked drains, and the need for deeper cleaning in some areas, which slightly lowers the score.
The location is highly praised, with easy access to shops, pubs, public transport, and walking routes including Hadrian’s Wall. Central yet quiet, it is ideal for exploring Northumberland and the surrounding countryside.
Guests consistently describe the cottage as comfortable, warm, and spacious, with cosy beds and a relaxing atmosphere. Some minor issues were noted with bedding and sofa comfort, but overall, guests felt at home.
The cottage is well-equipped with a large kitchen, dishwasher, washing machine, and log burner. Some guests mentioned maintenance issues such as slow-draining showers, worn pillows, and minor appliance problems, but these did not detract significantly from their stay.
Several guests appreciated thoughtful touches such as welcome cakes, wine, and milk, as well as helpful communication from the host. However, as these gestures are not guaranteed for every stay, future guests should not expect them as standard.
Set in the heart of the charming Northumberland town of Haltwhistle, this lovely end-terrace cottage is conveniently located near a selection of shops, pubs and restaurants, and provides a perfect base for a family break. Guests will be delighted with the well-equipped kitchen and cosy sitting room with original beams, woodburner and dining area. Upstairs, you’ll find three comfortable bedrooms and a family bathroom with bath and separate shower, and outside is a small courtyard space with garden furniture. Nestled in the heart of Hadrian's Wall Country, which offers excellent walking and fishing, there is also fishing available on the North Tyne, two minutes’ walk from the property, along with Vindolanda, a fascinating Roman fort lying to the south of Hadrian's Wall. With easy access to the majestic castles and sweeping beaches of the Heritage Coast, or the gardens and castle at Alnwick, Bastle House is a very well-placed base for a family holiday.
Known as the 'Centre of Britain', the small market town of Haltwhistle is a great place from which to explore both Northumberland and Cumbria. The only thing negative would be the bedroom curtains which don't block any light out.Maybe a blackout blind would be a good addition.Parking isn't an issue as there is a free carpark round the corner.

Nice and warm, beds really comfortable. Other reviewers commented on the smell which is definitely there (but presume its the drainage due to the age of the property) not sure what can be done?? We would stay again ( would be nice to have a welcome pack/ visitors book) for future guests. And we did struggle a bit getting the key from safe - maybe due to the cold weather. Many thanks Ruth and Chris

Negative - bulbs blown in living area + none on site, outdated TV.
