About this property

Nestled amidst the countryside setting of the North Pennines AONB in the pretty village of Allendale is the holiday cottage The Forge. This stone built semi-detached cottage property can host friends and families in pursuit of exploring this wonderful part of Northumberland. Enter into the sitting room where the wood burning stove takes centre stage and relax after long walks on the moorland. Enjoy preparing and dining in the spacious kitchen/diner where appliances are arranged in a contemporary setting. Head upstairs to the bedrooms and the well-appointed bathroom with a bath and walk-in shower. The master bedroom is a large room with a double bed and a single bed - ideal for families with young children - whilst the two remaining rooms both have twin beds. Within a short distance of the cottage is a shop for picking up essentials, a family butcher, cafe and a selection of pubs for well-deserved relaxation after an action packed day. After exploring the village enjoy a gentle stroll along the pretty River East Allen or sample Allendale real ale from the town’s own brewery located at Allen Mill. The surrounding countryside setting of the North Pennines AONB is popular with both walkers and cyclists and it is easy to see why with its plethora of routes taking in moorlands, waterfalls and wildlife. For the serious walkers and fell runners the 26 mile Allendale Challenge takes place annually. Immerse in the history of Northumberland by visiting the UNESCO World Heritage site Hadrian’s Wall, which provides wonderful walks with breath-taking scenery of rugged landscape. Other places to visit whilst staying here include the market town of Hexham, Killhope Mine, the city of Newcastle and the Heritage coastline. The Forge is a superb base for that long awaited holiday in Northumberland.

Allendale is a bustling village resting in the centre of the busy lead mining area, and many relics of the mining era remain around the area. It is well positioned for exploring Carlisle and Lake District to the west, Hexham, Newcastle and Durham to the east and the Hadrian's Wall just to the north, as well as the Scottish borders. The area offers a plethora of walking and cycling opportunities, with the Coast to Coast path nearby for keen bikers.

It was spotlessly clean with great facilities. There was a very welcome welcome pack there for us on arrival which was very thoughtful. The beds were comfy, the shower is fab and the kitchen is very well equipped. Instructions were clear and the wood burning stove was easy to light and warned us up after a rainy day. There is a wee yard you can barbecue in if you need and a park just across the road makes up for the lack of garden. There are two pubs within east walking distance and Allendale itself is a great spot to explore the area from and is a lovely, quiet village. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend the village or the property. If you pushed me for constructive feedback literally the only thing I can say is that it would be helpful if there were also some kitchen basics like olive oil and salt and pepper in the kitchen as some self catering properties have. But that was a minor inconvenience, the property literally has everything else…even a water bowl for the dog! We loved it and may well be back for a return visit. Thank you for a great stay.

The house was clean, comfortable and well looked after, in a very nice, calm village. Would definitely recommend!

A great area to explore with a toddler. The furthest we travelled away was to Killhope. The community is very welcoming and offer helpful suggestions of local walks and shops.
