For a holiday with a difference, Whitehall Pele Tower is a wonderfully atmospheric 14th-century Pele Tower providing a magnificent setting for a large family or group, perfectly placed for exploring the Lake District and Solway Coast. Grade I listed, the house has been owned by the same family for 150 years and has a long and fascinating history. An addition to the original building was made in the 16th century and the first restoration was made in 1861, after it was bought by the merchant and philanthropist George Moore.

The house stands in an acre of grounds containing the picturesque ruins of a Victorian manor house. Two of the larger lawns can be used for family games. Really lovely and unusual property. The house is very spacious and comfortable, and the kitchen is well-supplied with equipment and all the basics for cooking. There are lots of games, DVDs, and table tennis for wet weather, too. Highly recommended.

The Tower was a marvellous place - 'fairytale meets history' in my daughter's words. Very well equipped for a large group enabling a festive gathering for Christmas. The house had even been decorated prior to our arrival - such a lovely surprise. Everything is clearly and simply explained so it was easy to deal with practical things like heating and bins and the lovely log fire, a nice big fridge, two ovens (both used!) and capacious dishwasher with tablets provided. Don't forget this house is very close to the Lakes and our party were out climbing peaks every day and still had the energy for some competitive table tennis in the evenings. Plenty of parking for numerous cars if you are bringing a group together from diverse locations, places to put your walking boots. The beds were really comfortable - really good mattresses - yea! We are from the South so it was our first time going to Booths (at Keswick) - the Waitrose of the North - brilliant. Anything missing? Well, we thought a grand piano could be a good addition...
