About this property

A pretty, semi-detached cottage, on the edge of the old village of Scales, just a mile from the sea and 4 miles from the ever-popular market town of Ulverston. This charming Scales cottage provides warm, welcoming accommodation, with a spacious sitting room, cosy multi-fuel stove, two delightful bedrooms and a small, well-equipped kitchen with useful porch area. In a quiet and peaceful area, with fabulous Lakeland countryside and the beautiful beaches and coastline of the Furness Estuary on the very doorstep, this Scales holiday cottage is close to the festival town of Ulverston, with its many pubs and restaurants and bi-weekly market, whilst the sandy beaches of the Furness coast and Coniston, with its mountain biking, climbing and watersports, are just a short drive away. With Eskdale Railway, the World of Beatrix Potter and the fabulous Lake District National Park all within easy reach, this is a wonderful holiday location and a welcoming Scales cottage, any time of year.

The small village of Scales is situated on the Cumbrian Peninsula and makes a fabulous base to explore this gem of an area. The name Scales originates from an old Norse word meaning ‘huts'. Ulveston, an ancient market town, is only four miles away and it has retained its community spirit, holding a thriving street market every Thursday and Saturday and there are many festivals throughout the year. One of the claims to fame Ulveston has is that it is the birthplace of Stan Laurel, and to commemorate their famous son there is a Laurel and Hardy Museum. The Furness Coast has unspoiled sandy beaches and bird watching opportunities and the Cumbrian national Park is within easy reach. With plenty of family attractions in the area, this a great place for a holiday.

The porch lets in water which was very challenging due to the weather whilst we were there. Top of washing machine and dryer in need of good clean. Kitchen quite clean other than dirty windows. The fridge freezer required me to completely clean the fridge before I could use. Tha sitting room again at first sight seemed clean but was not. Dusty skirting boards and cobwebs on the light fittings. There were food crumbs under one sofa, log burner covered in dust, enough for me to write "Hello" in it and be clearly seen. No instructions for the use of the log burner. Bathroom shower extreme black mould on door, base and grouting. The radiator in the bathroom does not work despite it supposedly running from the log burner. The stairs are from the sitting room up and they had very large cobwebs IE 6/7" in length. Wall paper was peeling in places. Double bedroom has black mould under and wallpaper and on the wallpaper by the window. The wallpaper is peeling extensively. Again the windows need a good clean. Bedroom 2 was not as bad but again under the beds fluff and dust all around the skirting boards. And the landing area is also in need of skirting boards cleaning, dresser top has pot pourri in a bowl which should be thrown away as so very dusty and dirty. One last matter is that exiting the drive onto the road needs extreme caution if you have a low bumper and suspension as there is a distinct "V" were the drive meets the road. I had to ensure no husband in the passenger seat of my vehicle to alleviate the weight on the front of the vehicle as the bumper caught. So, a very disappointing experience all in all.

Down side was that I had to clean both ovens, racks and trays before I could use them.

Figured it out after a few dats of inconsistent temperature. And comfort fluctuations. Extra heating would be appreciated in kitchen. I would like to suggest suggest a curtain on the stairs to avoid draughts and keep warmth in living/dining area. (This was not a problem for us even in cold days Jan/Feb but is a suggestion.)
