The Black Bull in Appleby-in-Westmorland is a spacious, characterful cottage ideally located in the heart of town, close to shops, pubs, and scenic walks. Guests appreciate the ample room, en-suite bedrooms, and well-equipped kitchen, making it suitable for families and groups. While the property is clean and comfortable, some areas could benefit from a little TLC and deeper cleaning. Parking is available but can be tight. Overall, it offers good value and a homely atmosphere, with many guests returning for repeat stays.
Most guests found the property clean and tidy, though several mentioned areas needing a more thorough clean, such as cobwebs, dust, and lingering odours from a previous radiator leak. The overall impression is of acceptable cleanliness, but with room for improvement.
The location is highly praised, being central to Appleby with easy access to shops, pubs, and local attractions. Guests found it convenient for exploring the town and surrounding countryside.
Guests consistently mention the spaciousness, comfortable beds, and cosy sofas. The en-suite bedrooms are a highlight. Some noted the house can be cold in winter and that floors are uneven, but overall comfort is rated highly.
The property offers generous facilities, including a well-equipped kitchen, en-suite bathrooms, and private parking. Some appliances (washing machine, dryer, second fridge) need attention, and minor maintenance issues were noted, but most needs are met.

You are instantly transported back in time once you are surrounded by many original features such as the exposed beams, flagged floors and doorways.
The local area is also steeped in history, just a few hundred yards from the front door at the top of Burougate is Appleby Castle, a 12th century keep, and in the opposite direction is St Lawrences Church on the banks of the River Eden, with elements dating back to the 12th century.
The property lies within the stunning Eden Valley with many quaint villages. Appleby is close to the course of a 268-mile National Trail, which passes by on its way from Middleton-in-Teesdale to nearby Dufton. With High Cup Nick and Dufton Pike on the trail and just a short drive away you have some amazing walks and adventures, while the Lake District National Park is less than 30 minutes away in car. You can take a trip on a lake cruiser or enjoy the epic scenery only found in the Lake District National Park.

A fantastic location with great facilities. All rooms en suite plus a family bathroom. Furnished to reflect the age of the property . Given the nature of the property some of the stairs are narrow with reduced head height. Comfortably house 6 adults with good sized rooms. Floors can be uneven but this is the age of the property and it in keeping with a period property. It is not a refurbished property and this should be noted. This is not 5 star accommodation but is clean and comfortable with all amenities. Good value for money

Great cottage, plenty of space. Everthing you need is in there. Found a free parking car park, which was a bonus. The cottage is central for walks, bars, places to eat and shops

A lovely big house that is a bit tired but has potential. It’s all pretty clean and compares with a typical old 2/3 star hotel in terms of furnishings and decor. It’s clean enough and ticks the boxes for facilities and location, and budget.Certainly has the makings of a more desirable property.Paring at the rear is very restrictive, do not attempt it if you are not a confident at parking. Especially reversing.
