The historic town of Appleby-in-Westmorland lies in a loop of the River Eden and is overlooked by the North Pennines, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty with the Lake District Fells showing on the western horizon. Set at the heart of the lush Eden Valley and steeped in history, this is one of the loveliest towns in the north of England and was originally the county town of Westmorland. Appleby is nestled between the Lakes and Yorkshire Dales, so guests can enjoy the contrasting scenery of these two National Parks, plus numerous walking and cycling opportunities as well as the fantastic leisure centre in the town. Appleby has a wonderful selection of quality independent shops, cafes and delicatessens selling locally produced food and crafts. The picturesque street of Boroughgate, with some interesting old buildings, is at the heart of the town and links the well-preserved Norman Castle with the fine medieval Church of St. Lawrence. Appleby is a major stop on the Settle-Carlisle Railway, which is one of the most beautiful railway journeys in Britain, and still today many of the old steam trains wend their way along this line and over the historic and awe-inspiring Ribblehead viaduct. With the delightful Ullswater and the magnificent Lake District within easy reach, this is an ideal holiday location.

The hosts were lovely and on hand to support and answer any questions. Within the cottage there are lots of facilities and the walking up and down the hills was amazing- right outside the door. Although the cottage is in a remote setting we visited many places and enjoyed our time- luckily the weather was very kind to us too. Overall, we had an amazing holiday in the Hayloft and would thoroughly recommend it. If you had a larger group there is the 4 bedroom and then next door is a 2 bedded cottage so perfect for larger groups too. Our only feedback would be it would have been nice to have a welcome hamper ( I understand itâs another cost). Maybe just some milk and bread as nearest shop was a drive and when you travel at night the last thing you want to do is go back out for supplies. Thank you for a lovely stay we hope to be back in the future. Kind regards Liam and Zöe

Was given a warm welcome by the host when we arrived and had a great stay. Plenty of room, modern facilities. Kitchen well stocked. Owner was easily contactable when needed . Took our dog with us and would recommend it for dog owners. Only took 5-10 mins to get to Appleby and a good base for other sites. Property was warm throughout and we would definitely stay again.
