The area is a walker’s paradise, with trails leading from the doorstep across low fells and secluded valleys, including parts of the renowned Coast to Coast path. Cyclists will love the quiet country lanes, while nearby Smardale Nature Reserve and Sunbiggin Tarn are havens for birdwatchers and wildlife enthusiasts.
The historic Brough Castle, along with the market towns of Appleby and Penrith, are close by. Penrith also boasts the Rheged Centre, a hub for crafts, exhibitions, shopping, and a cinema. A pleasure to be in a cottage where everything was still pristine. The back garden was the owners' private space, but it was still nice to overlook, and the patio area is good to use when/if Cumbrian weather permits. There was a welcome pack, and the owners were friendly. Crosby Garrett has no shop, pub etc, but it is very picturesque and characterful, with walks from the door. Kirkby Stephen has good facilities, 4 miles away. The landscape is, of course, wonderful. It was not a problem for a couple like us, but it should be pointed out that the dining table, in the kitchen, is small, and two couples might have to eat in relays!We would certainly hope to return.Don't imagine, however, that red squirrels will pop up to greet you everywhere.
