Guests say

Poacher's Rest is a well-furnished cottage in the Peak District, appreciated for its spaciousness, central location, and cosy atmosphere. Guests have enjoyed the scenic views, the proximity to local attractions, and the additional touches like a Christmas tree and welcome gifts. While some guests have raised concerns about dampness and maintenance issues, the majority reflect a positive experience, highlighting the property's charm and the owner's hospitality.

Most guests found the cottage to be clean and well-kept, with only a few mentioning issues with dampness and odour. The positive remarks about the property's tidiness and the provision of a washer suggest a high standard of cleanliness.

The location is highly praised for its easy access to local towns, scenic walks, and tourist attractions. Despite being on a busy road, traffic noise seems to be minimal inside the cottage, and the convenience of the location outweighs any potential drawbacks.

Guests have found the cottage comfortable, particularly noting the spacious bedroom and cosy setting. However, some have mentioned that the lounge can be dark and that the property could benefit from updates to enhance comfort further.

The cottage is well-equipped with kitchen appliances, entertainment options, and a paddock for dogs. However, concerns about maintenance, such as heating issues and the presence of a dehumidifier, suggest room for improvement in this category.

The owners' thoughtfulness is evident in gestures like a warm welcome, a Christmas tree during the festive season, and welcome gifts. While these touches are appreciated, it is noted that such personal touches may vary and are not guaranteed for every stay.

About this property

A lovely one bedroom, stone-built modern cottage with fantastic walks from the doorstep and great views, conveniently located between Bakewell and Matlock on the outskirts of the village of Rowsley. Next to the owner’s home, this spacious detached property is ideal for couples looking for a romantic retreat. On the ground floor there is a modern kitchen with large dining table, a utility room and a cloakroom. Step down a few steps into the very roomy and tastefully furnished sitting room. It’s a lovely place to snuggle up together and watch a movie however there’s a large comfy sofa each if you fancy some alone time. On the first floor is a double en-suite bedroom which is tastefully furnished and enjoys oodles of space. From here there’s a door out to a large roof terrace leading on to a raised decked area with patio furniture. This is a fantastic place to sit and watch the sun set with uninterrupted views to the pasture and woods adjoining the garden. There are fantastic walks straight from the door and there’s a paddock for exercising your canine friend if they’re not already worn out from a good day’s walk. With something always going on in nearby Chatsworth, Bakewell, Matlock and Matlock Bath, this is a great base for exploring everything this beautiful part of the world has to offer.

The pretty village of Rowsley is situated just at the south of stately Chatsworth - home to the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire, and a stone’s throw from the impressive tudor-built Haddon Hall. This little village has many attractions, including Caldwell's Mill which houses the last water-powered roller flour mill and a range of craft workshops, shops and a restaurant, Peak Rail, which is a rail enthusiasts dream with rides along the valley, and the Peak Village which has many designer outlet shops with bargains galore together with feature attractions, a fitness centre and an old fashioned sweet shop and ice cream parlour. Rowsley offers a range of village amenities including shops, galleries, pubs and restaurants, excellent fly fishing facilities (day tickets available from the historic Peacock Hotel) and in neighbouring Reedsmere is the superb Michelin-starred East Lodge Hotel and Restaurant. Close by is Bakewell, capital of the Peak District, and home of the famous Bakewell pudding (definitely not tart!), still made locally to an old and secret recipe. This picturesque town is at the scenic heart of the Peak District, and further attractions in the area include Gulliver's Kingdom, the shops and eateries of Matlock Bath, and Alton Towers, also within easy touring distance, making the location ideal for the whole family to enjoy.
