The cottage is generally described as clean, though some guests noted the need for a deeper clean to address cobwebs. The overall impression is of a well-maintained property, but with room for improvement in thoroughness.
The location is highly regarded, with guests appreciating the beautiful village setting and proximity to local attractions and walks. The convenience to nearby towns and the Peak District adds to the appeal.
Guests find the cottage warm and cosy, especially with the provided fuel for the fire. Comfortable bedrooms and a good shower contribute to a pleasant stay, although some guests suggest the mattresses could be updated.
The facilities are generally good, with a well-equipped kitchen and ample supplies. However, some minor issues like missing pint glasses and the absence of a washing machine, despite being advertised, have been pointed out.

We stayed at The Smithy for 7 nights in a cold week at the end of January. The endless supply of coal and logs was wonderful and really appreciated as it made the cottage feel cosy and warm. The cottage is well equipped with all the things you could need. Good powerful shower, plenty of towels. Ample supply of reading books for raindays. Short walking distance to the two pubs. We ate several times at The Old Gate Inn and would certainly recommend it, especially the Sunday lunch. The only negatives are, the dvd player did work, it could do with a light on the driveway as it is very dark. It could do with a recycle bin and instructions in the kitchen. The biggest negative is the road noise. It starts at 5 am and there is a constant stream all day until around 6pm, we could hear it in the downstairs back bedroom. Overall and enjoyable stay.

Lovely cosy cottage, perfect for family winter stay. Village has a small playground for children and well placed for reaching other town / activities within 15-25mins. Would recommend.

Comfortable, warm accommodation in lovely location. Three good, double bedrooms, comfortable lounge with open fire (logs and coal provided for our Christmas stay), fairly well-equipped kitchen (a few more mugs and glasses would probably be useful), good dishwasher, electric hob and cooker. One of dining chairs damaged and rickety. Good shower room with plenty of hot water and useful additional toilet on ground floor. Nice outside area for visitors in warmer weather, secure for dogs. Overall, a well-resourced, reasonably priced and homely cottage. Friendly and communicative host.
