Cracken Cottage is a well-presented property with a high standard of refurbishment, offering a spacious and comfortable living space. It is praised for its central location in High Peak, making it an ideal base for exploring the Peak District. Guests appreciate the modern kitchen, large lounge, and welcoming atmosphere, especially the inclusion of pets without charge.
The property generally maintains good cleanliness, though some guests noted issues such as a dirty fridge and crumbs on a sideboard. The microwave and a toasting tray were also reported to need cleaning. These seem to be isolated incidents rather than a consistent problem.
The location is highly praised for its convenience, proximity to local amenities, and ease of access to public transport and the Peak District. The village of Chinley is noted to be pleasant, with good dining options nearby.
The property is described as cosy, warm, and spacious, with comfortable bedrooms and a large lounge. However, steep stairs and the layout may pose challenges for those with mobility issues or when carrying items between floors.
Facilities are modern and generally well-received, but guests have suggested improvements such as additional dining chairs, bins in bathrooms, and more kitchenware. Maintenance issues like a loose shower handle and a frosted-up freezer were also mentioned.
While some guests were disappointed with the lack of welcome gifts and festive decorations during a Christmas stay, there is insufficient information to determine if this is a regular occurrence or a one-off oversight. Therefore, it is not possible to accurately score thoughtfulness.
This beautifully designed three-floor retreat offers a perfect blend of modern comfort and rustic charm, making it an ideal getaway for families or groups looking to explore this picturesque region..

Cottage was great - really clean and spot on. The only thing which was annoying was that it appears that the adjoining ground floor door to a adjacent property allows cigarette smoke to permeate through and it is most unpleasant if you are non smokers (which were all). Not sure how it can be overcome apart from leaving a door open for 10 minutes each time you come back to the house, but certainly the only downside

Enjoyed our short stay but coud have been improved on by attention to detail. As previous reviews mentioned but still not acted on:1) no hand towels provided2) no bath mats for standing on when getting out of the shower/bath3) no litter bins in any of the bedrooms or in the bathrooms or lounge4) had to bag up our rubbish in black bin liners and leave in the courtyard as we couldn't find the dustbins to deposit them in apart from the recycling ones that were on the street and overflowing. That said the location is perfect for walks from the doorstep and a quick train journey from just around the corner to New Mills.Lovely and warm with excellent heating control.A matter of preference but I would prefer higher back sofas in the lounge area, plus a bigger/extendable dining table.Lots of space in the kitchen for stocking numerous pots/pans/cooking utensils but not used to its full potential! Also need more plates and glasses etc so that the dishwasher isn't constantly on.We did find that the kitchen could do with a deep clean, we had to clean the microwave as there was food stuck to the inside roof and the toasting tray in the oven was full of crumbs and burnt bread and the kitchen bins could do with washing out, also the inside of the cabinet in the top floor bathroom was dirty with streaks of toothpaste on the sides and shelfs and the toothbrush holder was dirty in the bottom! If these small issues were addressed I would have no hesitation in giving 5* as an overall mark.

We had a great week at Cracken Cottage. The cottage was spotless & the lounge area / whole cottage was a really good size for the 7 of us.Walks are right on the doorstep & plenty of local pubs to enjoy a pint. The kitchen was slightly lacking - no bowls for mixing in or serving. But plenty of mugs & crockery. Also provided washing up liquid / sponge, salt & pepper & a lovely welcome basket of staples which was very welcome.Would definitely recommend for anyone who doesn't have an issue with stairs (kitchen on ground & longer bedrooms & bathrooms on 2nd & 3rd floors - but kept me fit after Christmas! Thank you.
