Guests say

The Hay Barn is a well-maintained and spotlessly clean cottage in the High Peak, praised for its peaceful location and welcoming atmosphere. Guests appreciate the thoughtful touches, including a welcome pack and well-equipped kitchen. While cosy and comfortable, some noted the mezzanine bedroom can be quite warm and the Wi-Fi limited. The property is ideal for couples and small families, with easy access to local amenities and countryside walks.

Guests consistently describe the property as very clean and tidy, with several reviews highlighting its spotless condition. This indicates a high standard of cleanliness maintained at the property.

The property's location is frequently praised for being peaceful and calm, with easy access to the stunning Peak District, local amenities, and transport links. Its proximity to good walks and countryside is a recurring positive aspect.

The cottage is generally regarded as comfortable and cosy, particularly suitable for two guests. However, some guests mentioned that the mezzanine bedroom can become overly warm, and the seating could be cosier, slightly affecting the comfort score.

Facilities are well-regarded, with a well-equipped kitchen and thoughtful amenities. Some minor points were raised about lighting for activities like jigsaws and the warmth of the mezzanine. The presence of laundry facilities and a wood burner are noted pluses.

Guests have mentioned a welcome pack and basic essentials provided, which reflects a level of thoughtfulness. However, as gifts are not guaranteed for every stay, this score reflects the positive mentions without setting an expectation of gifts.

About this property

The Hay Barn is an inviting cottage set just paces from the canal within the New Mills Marina, Derbyshire. Upon arrival you are greeted with a designated parking space for one car, but due to this central location in the town, you’ll hardly need the car all week! Step into the open-plan living space and take over the kitchen, preparing a delicious meal before retreating to the sofa and spending some downtime beside the woodburning stove. Freshen up in the ground-floor shower room before heading upstairs to the mezzanine bedroom. To the outside is a small patio space housing a picnic bench, where you can enjoy your morning coffee before heading into the town centre. Well-placed for accessing the delights of New Mills, Hayfield and the Peak District, The Hay Barn is a great escape for couples. Note: This property can be booked with Ref. 1126269, together sleeping up to 14 guests.

The Derbyshire Peak District includes the little town of New Mills, which is located on the boundary between North West Derbyshire and Cheshire. Since the 13th century, the Torrs Riverside Park (also known as "the park under the town") has served as a location for recreation and relaxation. In the late 20th century, the New Mills Heritage Centre was established to promote tourism in the region. While Chapel en le Frith, the Capital of the Peaks, with its cobblestone market and historic old stocks, is only 5 miles away, the Torrs Millennium Walkway, a beloved bridge situated deep in the canyon, draws a lot of visitors. The lovely spa town of Buxton, which is easily accessible by car, is well known for its healing spring water as well as for its Pavillion Gardens and magnificent Victorian Opera House, which hosts a variety of shows and draws visitors from all over the world. The Blue John display caves at Castleton and other grand homes, including Chatsworth House and Lyme Hall, are also easily accessible by car. Since there are direct rail connections to Manchester, the Hope Valley, and Sheffield, you could even leave your car at home. a great launching point for Peak District exploration.

Very well maintained & clean throughout with a great location on the canal for walks. Parking bay immediately outside is very helpful. The kitchen is fully equipped. The downstairs bathroom is a good size and is very warm with ample towels. Free Wi-Fi worked fine for us. The tv is modern with hdmi inputs for fire stick, dvd player etc if you want your own evening entertainment. As others have said, the mezzanine bedroom can get ridiculously hot & stuffy with the rising heat. The log fire was great and bags of logs can be bought at the marina office for approx £8. There is no enclosed space for the dog - it’s an open area with bench & bbq facilities. It’s also helpful that Torrside brewery is the building next door & has its own bottle shop to sample their lovely ales. It would be great to stay there in the summer months.

The facilities are really good, with everything you should need. A peaceful setting, yet very walkable to all of the town's facilities, which were great. The check in and all service offered was excellent. Tip: upstairs gets very warm if you have the heating/fire on downstairs, so we opened the upstairs windows in order to be able to sleep. One thing: would benefit from some cushions/more comfy/cosy seating in the lounge.

There is nowhere to just let the dog out which was a bit of a pain having to take him out on the lead numerous times a day especially as it was -5 degrees during our stay. Also, as heat rises, with having the log burner on so much due the freezing weather, the upstairs mezzanine bedroom gets really hot. Not having an upstairs toilet a bit of a pain also. Nice little cottage and marina, probably lovely in the warmer summer months.
