Guests say

The Sergeants Quarters at Golden Hill Fort offers a truly unique and memorable stay, with its fascinating history, spacious layout, and stunning rooftop views. Guests consistently praise the excellent location, helpful property manager, and well-equipped kitchen. While many found the property clean and comfortable, some noted areas for improvement in cleanliness and maintenance, particularly regarding sofas and mattresses. The property is especially well-suited for families and dog owners, with beautiful surroundings and easy access to local attractions. Overall, it provides a distinctive and enjoyable base for exploring the Isle of Wight.

Several guests found the property clean and tidy, but a notable number mentioned issues such as mould, dust, cobwebs, and the need for a deep clean. Cleanliness appears inconsistent, with some areas requiring more attention.

The location is highly praised for its uniqueness, beautiful surroundings, and convenience to Freshwater, Yarmouth, and local attractions. The setting within a historic fort and proximity to walks and amenities are standout features.

Most guests found the property comfortable and spacious, with high-quality fixtures and en-suites. However, repeated comments about old or sagging sofas and mattresses, as well as some accessibility concerns, slightly detract from overall comfort.

The property is generally well-equipped, with a modern kitchen, laundry, and en-suite bedrooms. Some maintenance issues were reported, such as broken appliances and minor repairs needed, but these were often addressed promptly by the manager.

While the property manager is frequently praised for being helpful and responsive, there are no consistent mentions of welcome gifts or starter packs. Some guests noted the absence of basics like milk or washing up liquid. Please note that gifts or welcome packs are not guaranteed.

The location is unusual and an interesting stay. The apartment is reasonably well equipped and a good location for the west end the IOW. Written with a mobility issue or maybe young children the internal stairs are steep. The two steps inside the front door to 2 of the the lower bedrooms have handrails in awkward positions. The floors of the showers can be slightly slippery when wet - a safety mat helped but none was provided. The niggles - not enough to spoil your break , but maybe enough to consider other options if returning. No Welcome pack provided with this property described as luxury, not even milk and not many basics ie tin foil and only a squeeze of washing up liquid. So plan to take everything you need or shop for it.Basically clean but could have benefited from some attention to detail in a few areas - descaling kettles ( I completed this during my stay) , toilet rims and dusting of lamp bases. We found the mattresses uncomfortable and felt very basic and certainly could do with some improvement- The pillows had no puff and need replacing. The built in coffee machine did not work it needs a part- it wasn’t advertised as a feature but instructions were in the guest info folder and previous comments indicate it has not been working for a while. The kitchen waste bin closure was broken and the “fix” was to place the food caddy on top.The seal on the fridge door needed fixing as it wasn’t very positive and felt like the fridge door had been open on several occasions. These issues made the property feel a little unloved and with a small amount of effort could make this property exceptional. The good stuffThe previously commented on sofas had been replaced and were comfy. Lots of games and puzzles - the views from the roof ( spiral stairs to access)We felt it was good value for what we paid and had an enjoyable break,Nearby places to visit Off the Rails cafe for LunchThe Red Lion for accomplished cooking/ dinnerThe waterfront for good food with a view.Harvey’s store in Yarmouth for local shopping to support the local economy.Avoid the needles amusement park other than for the chairlift ( not working on our visit) -very tacky

Amazing place to stay with rooftop gardens and a 360 degree views surrounding by the fort park which our dog loved. Local food store, take alway’s and pubs close by. I would recommend a car. The accommodations itself is modern, comfortable and well equipped with a fascinating history.

Absolutely stunning property in a unique location. The conversion from the old Fort to the New properties is absolutely brilliant and doesn't intrude on the original architecture. Well worth a stroll around the roof gardens too.The kitchen is well fitted and equipped. Each bedroom has an ensuite and additional toilet on the upper level. The location was perfect for us and the whole island is within easy reach.I personally didn't get on with the mattress softness but that's pretty much personal preference. Loved the accessibility of the wet room shower and having the bedrooms on the ground floor really works. For days out go and see Red Squirrels at Ventnor Botanic Gardens. Dinosaur Footprints at Compton Bay, Queen Victoria's house at Osborne house and the lovely castle at Carisbrooke.
