Cleanliness has been frequently mentioned as an issue, with guests noting unclean surfaces and a general lack of thorough cleaning. This suggests a need for better standards in this area.

About this property

The Shingles is a two-bedroom property situated in the seaside resort of Sandown, Isle of Wight. Enjoying an excellent location, close to amenities and the beach, this traditional abode welcomes families for a stay on the Isle of Wight. After a day of exploring, look forward to putting your feet up in the living/dining, complete with a TV, perfect for a cosy movie night, and here there is also an additional dining space. Move into the kitchen/diner, where you can chat and dine together over a home-cooked meal. As the night grows darker, choose between the double bedroom, featuring a TV, and the twin bedroom, both decorated in a neutral style. When you’re ready to explore further, step out into the garden, where you can appreciate the fresh sea air and make the most of the sunshine by dining alfresco at the patio space, or enjoying a picnic on the lawn. The seaside town of Southdown, just steps away from the house, offers something for everyone, from the stunning beach, ideal for a leisurely stroll or a day of sandcastle building, to the vibrant town centre, complete with a variety of independent shops, cafes, and restaurants. Further afield, take a visit to Shanklin, just a short drive away, where you can explore the Old Village with its delightful thatched cottages, or venture to Ryde, where you can take a ride on the oldest surviving pier in Britain and capture a picture of the iconic buses at the Bus and Coach Museum. Alternatively, head to Newport and pick up some goodies in the shopping centre, enjoy riverside walks, or visit the thriving arts centre and multiplex cinema, museums, and parks. A stay at The Shingles is the perfect way to explore the hidden gems of the Isle of Wight.

Situated on the south east coast of the island, this lovely town has something for everyone! It is home to the longest stretch of beach on the island, extending six miles from the chalk headland of Culver Cliff in the north, to Dunnose Head in the south. This glorious expanse of sand provides excellent bathing, and facilities for all kinds of watersports. Blackgang Chine is perfect for the young and young at heart, with attractions such as the Hall of Funny Mirrors, Giant Hedge Maze and a 100m fast boat slide. The Shanklin Chine is also well worth a visit, with its dramatic waterfalls and deeply shaded paths. Boasting lovely coastal walks and spectacular scenery, Sandown is known as one of the sunniest places on the South coast, making it a perfect holiday destination for all.

Lounge was clean and tidy but the seating was uncomfortable. Bedrooms were fine. Bathroom needs an upgrade, peeling paint and a leaky shower screen. An issue with towels and heating was quickly resolved. The kitchen was clean but like something out of the sixties. Potentially an excellent Property but update please!!Excellent situation ,shame about the maintenance.

I would agree with other reviews though that the cottage does need some maintenance. Especially to the kitchen and the decor needs upgrading.

Consequently, we have stopped in a great many properties all over the island so far. Unfortunately, I must say that this particular property is, by far, the worst that we have ever used. Firstly, the booking page needs to clearly indicate acceptable arrival or departure times. For many properties, the arrival time is 3 pm, so we arrived on Saturday at around 2:50 pm. However, the so-called "cleaners" were still on site and informed us that the arrival time was, in fact, 4 pm. They did offer to allow us to leave our belongings, but we declined and came back an hour later. I say "so-called cleaners" because the property was far from acceptable when we finally arrived. The kitchen table had a vinyl tablecloth with bits of food stuck to it in several places, and the toilet was in a deplorable state, with a dirty seat and unmentionable substances stuck to the tiles just next to the toilet cleaning brush. The TV screen and kitchen windows were filthy. We rented the property for two weeks, but to our surprise, there was only one hand towel and two bath towels for the entire period to supposedly serve two people. There was also no tea towel at all, so we had to go out and buy our own. On Saturday morning, at the end of the first week of our stay, the cleaners turned up at 10 am on the dot. We answered the door and asked them what they wanted, and they said that they had come to do the changeover. They were utterly oblivious to the fact that we were renting the property for two weeks. Additionally, there were no spare bin bags or floor mats in the bathroom, and the shower screen leaked so badly when we took a shower that we had to mop the floor every time we used it. The paint around the bathroom window is peeling off. In addition to all of the above, the property itself is generally very shabby and seriously needs a makeover. We shall not return to this property and certainly would not recommend it to others.
