Edith Nesbit (author of The Railway Children) grew up in Halstead in the 1870s and her wanderings close to the local railway line may well have inspired her 1906 classic. The well-known North Downs Way offers spectacular views and a fascinating heritage, passing through the nearby Kent Downs Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The following part of the trail incorporates the historic Pilgrims Way and the heights of the top of the Downs.
The nearby farm hosts an annual (April) ’lambing day’ and country market in the field directly opposite the property. My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our short stay in this comfortable, modern and clean cottage, perfectly situated for our day jaunts as far away as Rye and Canterbury. Janet and Steve were lovely hosts, including a generous welcome pack of goodies, which was very helpful since we'd just arrived in England. Location was quiet, bed was luxuriously comfy and we loved having heated towels after our showers :) Parking spot was great - only tricky part for us was high hedge visibility difficulty getting in and out of the driveway on the sometimes busy lane, but we managed! Wish we could have stayed longer!

Janet and Steve are warm and welcoming. We have been several times and they feel like old friends. The location is peaceful with lovely views from the bedroom window. The items in the fridge are all very tasty. We are returning in December.
