Guests say

Guests frequently praise the cottage's cleanliness, picturesque location by the river, and the well-equipped kitchen. The property is appreciated for its comfort, including the presence of a bathroom on every floor and comfortable lounge. The local pubs and community feel add to the charm, although some guests mention noise from nearby social activities. Thoughtful touches like a welcome tray are noted, enhancing the stay.

Guests that stayed at this property said

The cottage consistently receives high marks for cleanliness, with multiple reviews mentioning it being well kept and tidy. The efforts to maintain cleanliness, especially during COVID, are appreciated by guests.

The location is highly praised for its beautiful river views and proximity to local attractions and pubs. However, some guests note noise from the nearby social club, particularly on weekends, which slightly impacts the score.

Comfort is generally well-regarded, with positive comments on the lounge and bedroom facilities. Some guests find the pillows too firm and the quilts too heavy, and there are occasional remarks about noise from neighbours and the social club.

Facilities are considered comprehensive and well thought out, with a well-equipped kitchen and multiple fridges. However, some guests suggest improvements such as additional wardrobe space, lighter quilts, and larger TVs.

Guests appreciate the thoughtful touches like the welcome tray with mince pies and milk, though it is politely noted that such gifts are not guaranteed. The provision of local information and the well-stocked kitchen contribute to the high score in this category.

About this property

1, River Cottage is a smart attached cottage on three levels with lovely, long, elevated views up and down river, conveniently situated in the hub of Calstock's village life. Just right for family holidays or a great spot for couples. From a central hall you step in to the cosy, comfy living room which has a wood-burning stove, opposite is the bright, modern kitchen/dining room with a door to the courtyard. At this level there is a utility room and WC. Head up the stairs to two bedrooms: a king-size zip-linked double and a single bedroom with doors to a roof terrace with table and chairs for al fresco meals. Family bathroom. More stairs up to the master double bedroom with en suite shower-room and doors to a little balcony with superb panoramic views just perfect for those sundowners. At the side is an enclosed courtyard with BBQ and at the front, a sunny little paved area with a bench looking over the green to the river. A picturesque and convenient spot for observing and enjoying village and river activity. Lovely walks from the

village with footpath to Cotehele House (National Trust), 1 mile. Fun canoeing expeditions. Once a thriving mining valley, now a World Heritage Site dominated by birdsong.

Calstock is a village in Cornwall, although it stands on the meandering River Tamar close to the Devon border and is dominated by the spectacular Calstock Viaduct, a giant 11-arched structure that still carries the railway line above the River Tamar along the picturesque branch line down to Plymouth. Calstock has been an important quay for centuries, transporting tin, copper and granite out of this important mining area downstream to Plymouth Docks. Today Calstock is a quiet village with a vibrant arts centre attracting musicians and artists from around Cornwall. A mile downstream brings you to Cotehele, a well-preserved medieval National Trust house with glorious gardens sweeping down to the River Tamar. Upstream from Calstock is Morwellham Quay, another important river port and now a living history tourist attraction where visitors can explore a copper mine by taking a train deep underground, admire the working Victorian farm or just quietly enjoy the beautiful Tamar Valley wildlife.

The fan from kitchen of pub opposite the cottage also extremely noisy when it was running. I feel the cottage was not accurately described in the information and I had assumed it was on the riverbank in a quiet location not in the main square where two very busy public houses are next door. The holiday was spoilt by poor night's sleep each night. I feel the information on booking site misrepresented the cottages location. The cottage was nice but very noisy at all times when the pub open I am afraid I shall not be using Sykes holiday company again after this experience

However very badly let down by - No washing up sponges / scourer pads in kitchen , No broom to sweep kitchen floor , No oven trays for pizza etc , Heating almost useless - house was cold and damp and NOT cozy , Very damp musty smell in lounge which badly affected asthma sufferer with bad chest and sinus issues. Needs a bit of TLC - the rear gutters are blocked up which is probably what's causing the damp musty smell in the lounge.

I would only comment that on arrival I was desperate for the toilet and there wasn't any toilet roll in the downstairs WC. My husband had to check the other bathrooms to locate some. We ended up purchasing some to put in there. I am an early to bed, early to rise person but the cottage was very noisy in the evenings into the early hours with revelry in the community centre next door. It is for this reason only that we are unlikely to stay again. If you are into that lifestyle then this is the perfect place to stay.
