Guests say

1 River Cottage in Calstock is a well-appointed, clean, and comfortable holiday rental with reliable broadband and a well-equipped kitchen. It is situated in a friendly village, ideal for exploring Dartmoor, the coast, and Plymouth, with good transport links. Guests appreciate the thoughtful touches like a welcome tray, although some mention noise from the nearby social club and pub.

The property consistently receives high praise for its cleanliness, with multiple reviews mentioning it being very clean and well-kept. The efforts to make the property COVID secure are also noted, contributing to the high score.

The location is generally seen as excellent, with its proximity to the river, pubs, and local attractions. However, some guests mention noise from the nearby social club and pub, which slightly affects the score.

Guests find the beds and sofas comfortable, and the property spacious enough for families. A few guests noted that some furniture was uncomfortable and that the bed in the 2nd floor en-suite room was small, but these are minor compared to the overall positive feedback.

The property is well-equipped with kitchen amenities, broadband, and washing facilities. However, some guests noted the lack of wardrobes, small TV, and issues with parking and noise. The presence of a blocked drain and a non-functioning grill in some reviews suggests some maintenance issues.

Many reviews mention thoughtful touches like a welcome tray with biscuits and tea, which guests appreciated. However, as not all reviews mention gifts and there is no guarantee of such amenities, the score reflects the positive feedback without assuming these are standard.

About this property

1, River Cottage is a smart attached cottage on three levels with lovely, long, elevated views up and down river, conveniently situated in the hub of Calstock's village life. Just right for family holidays or a great spot for couples. From a central hall you step in to the cosy, comfy living room which has a wood-burning stove, opposite is the bright, modern kitchen/dining room with a door to the courtyard. At this level there is a utility room and WC. Head up the stairs to two bedrooms: a king-size zip-linked double and a single bedroom with doors to a roof terrace with table and chairs for al fresco meals. Family bathroom. More stairs up to the master double bedroom with en suite shower-room and doors to a little balcony with superb panoramic views just perfect for those sundowners. At the side is an enclosed courtyard with BBQ and at the front, a sunny little paved area with a bench looking over the green to the river. A picturesque and convenient spot for observing and enjoying village and river activity. Lovely walks from the

village with footpath to Cotehele House (National Trust), 1 mile. Fun canoeing expeditions. Once a thriving mining valley, now a World Heritage Site dominated by birdsong.

Calstock is a village in Cornwall, although it stands on the meandering River Tamar close to the Devon border and is dominated by the spectacular Calstock Viaduct, a giant 11-arched structure that still carries the railway line above the River Tamar along the picturesque branch line down to Plymouth. Calstock has been an important quay for centuries, transporting tin, copper and granite out of this important mining area downstream to Plymouth Docks. Today Calstock is a quiet village with a vibrant arts centre attracting musicians and artists from around Cornwall. A mile downstream brings you to Cotehele, a well-preserved medieval National Trust house with glorious gardens sweeping down to the River Tamar. Upstream from Calstock is Morwellham Quay, another important river port and now a living history tourist attraction where visitors can explore a copper mine by taking a train deep underground, admire the working Victorian farm or just quietly enjoy the beautiful Tamar Valley wildlife.

It was very well equipped with super comfy beds. The location is great for exploring with lots to see close by. Having a railway station in the village was a bonus too. Calstock is a very busy village with lots going on but we found this a positive. The owner was kind enough to help us figure out the TV - we didn’t have a techie with us!

We were a family of 4 plus 1 dog and there was plenty of space - especially the kitchen, which was well stocked and could accommodate 8 people for a Sunday roast (we had friends living close by!). Although clean, I was surprised that some of the areas looked tired - especially given the cost for 5 nights. Recommend to think before using the downstairs loo, as it only has frosted glass and you can see through .. overall a good day and peaceful in the Autumn, but expect it can be noisy in the summer with the village pub being a 1 min walk away.

We personally found the very loud TV through the lounge wall from next door more intrusive. Thankfully it was just the lounge affected (all day and evening), no-where else in the house. Aside from that, this is a very spacious, comfortable and well-equipped cottage with good hot water, towels and was very clean. There’s no shop in the village for supplies but there are two pubs, a great café and a couple of art galleries with some great stuff. The nearest big supermarkets are in Tavistock or Callington but there’s a full sized fridge freezer so it’s easy to stock up with supplies. The train station is a short walk away as is the bus and there’s plenty of walks right from the door and lovely views of the river from the house. A really lovely place to stay. Recommended.
