About this property

Tucked away in the village of St Hilary, in the Mounts Bay area, is this idyllic 18th century cottage. Less than 2 miles from the coast and close to the popular resort of Marazion, The Thatched Cottage makes an excellent base for families or group of friends. Boasting traditional features, including exposed beams and granite hearth, this charming cottage invites you inside into the cosy sitting room, where you can rest on the plush sofas after a walk in the countryside. The cottage has a well-equipped kitchen overlooking the rear yard and surrounding fields, where you can prepare hearty meals to serve in the dining room. To the other side of the living room, you can access the spacious utility room featuring a walk-in shower, a separate WC, and from the utility room you reach the family bathroom. Upstairs, The Thatched Cottage offers three well-presented bedrooms with lovely views of the leafy front garden: a twin, and a single which leads through to the double. Enjoy a cottage styled garden to the front of the property. You are spoilt for choice with an abundance of footpaths and bridleways on your doorstep, or you can head to the coastline for superb sandy beaches and the coastal path. Goldsithney’s local shop and pubs are just a short walk away, whilst Marazion is within easy reach with a variety of shops, pubs, restaurants and St Michael’s Mount. Further afield, you have the popular resorts of Penzance and St Ives. The Thatched Cottage is a delightful cottage in a picturesque part of Cornwall.

The former mining village of St. Hilary is situated at the heart of the Mounts Bay area at the very foot of Cornwall, 3 miles from the sandy beach at Marazion, with its instantly recognisable landmark St Michael's Mount. An ideal base for a family or walking holiday, it has easy access to coastal and moorland walks on both the Land's End and the Lizard peninsulas, and St Ives Bay on the north coast as well. The village has an historic church, while the nearby village of Goldsithney has a pub serving good food and a village shop. 3 miles away the market town of Marazion has many eating establishments, pubs and shops and a sandy beach, as well as the famous medieval St Michael's Mount - at low tide visitors can walk the same path taken by the pilgrims in the Middle Ages. Penzance is just a 6 mile drive where helicopters fly you to the Scilly Isles on day trips. Within a short distance you can discover St. Ives, Land’s End, gardens and castles galore, the famous Eden Project and of course the breathtaking coast of Cornwall. A wonderful base for the perfect holiday.

It has great character, which is what I want from a holiday cottage, but it does come with quirks. There is a modern kitchen and a light, airy dining room in the rear extension. The bathroom provision, downstairs, is generous. The living room comprises the whole ground floor of the original cottage, but the ceiling is low - about 1.7 metres I'd guess; lower than the top of my head, at any rate. The front door and the door to the rear are lower still. I learned to duck. The steep and narrow stairs also demand care. The long reverse to the parking space is a little challenging, but do-able. Much mud on the lane from the car to the front door, and oatmeal carpets inside. Slippers a must. A good size twin bedroom and double bedroom, the latter reached through a single bedroom, which, for me, acted as a dressing room. The bed was comfortable and the location silent. Good sleeps. Good location for attractions in West Cornwall. A pleasant garden in front of the house, and country view to the rear. All in all, highly recommended. Hint for owner - Dyson vacuum cleaner unusable, by me at least. Argos do a simple Bush cleaner for around £50.

walking distance to a local shop, a couple of local pubs and the beach (just under 2miles). There have been several comments on here about parking being an issue down the narrow pathway at the side of the property, but we managed to get a Discovery Sport in there fine and, although we could have been asked to move, we never were. Yes, there is a slight musty smell when you first enter (the cottage is over 200 years old!), but the instructions left by the owners clearly asks you to vent the house and it was fine after. Low ceilings, again, it is over 200 years old and my 6ft tall husband coped fine! We are a family of 5 and it was more than comfortable for us…we loved the large dining table, which allowed us to have family meals when we were actually in! The front garden (no back garden) is lovely and fully enclosed…we were able to relax there in the evening sunshine. The only drawback was the lack of Wi-Fi…this may be down to issues with connectivity for such an old property and, normally, would be a welcomed break for us, but our eldest daughter had exams upon our return and everything from school is now online, but we muddled through…this is the only reason we have marked it down slightly. Would definitely come back and highly recommend!
