Portreath, with its sheltered harbour, was a hive of activity and industry in the 1800s as a major tin-exporting port. With its wild and craggy shoreline, the hamlet now attracts people from all over the world. The area is characterised by high cliffs, hidden coves, and sandy, surf-washed beaches, while relics of the area's rich industrial background can be found all around. Portreath has a tiny fishing harbour, stores, a few pubs, three cafés, and a Chinese restaurant, as well as a secure, sheltered sandy beach. Visit the cathedral city of Truro, 14 miles away, for a lovely day out, or travel a few miles along the coast and follow the magnificent length of sandy beach that runs down to Hayle and on to St Ives, a lovely spot for a vacation.
