Cleanliness scores are mixed, with several guests finding the cottage spotless and well-presented, while others noted areas needing improvement, such as dust and cobwebs. The presence of both positive and negative feedback suggests a generally good but occasionally inconsistent standard of cleanliness.

About this property

Ayr Cottage is situated in Bossiney, tucked along a hedgerow lane and surrounded by its pretty shrub-filled garden. This lovely detached cottage is on two levels and has 16th cent. origins and bags of character. Thick knobbly walls, some door lintels a bit lower than average and beams reflect its history. Step from the garden into the breakfast room and then through to the well equipped kitchen, which in turn leads you into the dining room - clearly the original part of the cottage, with a huge inglenook fireplace and wood-burning stove. Under an archway there is a small sun room with comfy sofa and lots of games for little ones to occupy themselves. The living room is surprisingly large, and this too has a big inglenook with a wood-burning stove – a lovely room to sit and relax after a bracing walk, or day on the beach. At this level there is a large utility room with separate WC and a shower cubicle. Head upstairs to three bedrooms – two double, one a king-size, and a bunk room with a washbasin, and the family bathroom. Most of its enclosed walled garden is to the front, with level patio table/chairs, gas BBQ, little summer house and raised patio. A ten minute walk takes you down to Bossiney Cove, or nip in the car and drive to nearby Trebarwith Strand or Crackington Haven – all lovely family beaches with good food pubs and cafes. Or visit the legendary harbour of Boscastle and its numerous pubs and cafes.

Tintagel, home of the legendary King Arthur’s Castle, whose ruins dominate the cliffside just outside the village, is a popular but not overcrowded tourist destination. The surrounding area is dominated by the sea, rocky coves and stunning scenery.

Perfect location for access to Tintagel, Boscastle, Port Isaac, Padstow and all the beautiful beaches and coastal walks in between. The cottage has some fantastic facilities. A well stocked kitchen, comfortable lounge and dining facilities and a little summer room stocked full of toys which an 18 month year old could only dream of and made great use. The visitors guide book has some great local recommendations. We enjoyed the many garden facilities including the bbq and garden games. The house was very clean and the housekeeper and maintenance man were both very attentive. We were surprised to read the negative reviews as we would highly recommend.

The first impressions of the cottage was that it was a bit shabby, on further inspection there was something leaking out of one of the kitchen cupboards all over the floor although we have no idea what it was. The two toilets and the bathroom sink and bath were clean but when looking further there was dust on all the skirtings and in all the corners all around the cottage. The downstairs shower does not work as the shower hose is broken and we only managed to get the tv to work after spending time messing with it. In the lounge there were loads of tiny flies all around the small window, of which we took a photo. Whilst we understand that this is an old property we feel that the overall cleanliness wasn’t really up to standard. We have stayed in a lot of Sykes cottages over the last 8 years and have always been pleased but unfortunately this cottage did not live up to our expectations. The location was great as was the outside space. Unfortunately we didn’t have the weather to enjoy the garden but if we had then I’m sure we would have enjoyed sitting outside and using the BBQ. Unfortunately we wouldn’t consider returning to Ayr cottage unless we knew that all these issues had been resolved. With the exception of one holiday we had in Tenby at a place called Atlantic View, again through Sykes cottages, we would have no hesitation returning to all of the other Sykes cottages we have stayed at.
