Guests say

The Log Cabin in Devon offers a tranquil, nature-rich experience with rustic charm. Guests appreciate the peaceful setting, wildlife sightings, and the warm welcome, often highlighted by fresh flowers and cream teas. While some find the cabin cosy and well-equipped, others note areas for improvement in comfort and maintenance.

Most guests found the cabin clean and tidy, with a few noting it could be dustier or have dead insects. One review mentioned a cleanliness issue with bugs, but this seems to be an isolated incident rather than a common theme.

The cabin's location is frequently praised for its beauty and tranquillity, with abundant wildlife and scenic views. However, some guests found it challenging to find and a bit too secluded, preferring closer proximity to local amenities.

Opinions on comfort vary; some guests found the beds and sofas lacking, while others were content. The presence of a wood burner adds a cosy element, but the comfort of the furniture is noted as an area that could be enhanced.

Facilities are generally seen as adequate, with a well-equipped kitchen and good shower pressure. However, some guests mentioned issues with TV reception and the need for better maintenance of the fire appliance. The lack of Wi-Fi and phone signal is noted, though some see this as a positive.

Many reviews express gratitude for the thoughtful touches like fresh flowers and cream teas upon arrival. While these gestures are highly appreciated, it's important to note that such amenities may vary and are not guaranteed for every stay.

About this property

Sheldon 0.5 miles. A real rustic retreat! An atmospheric log cabin in a valley on the edge of peaceful woodland, within the grounds of the owner's trout farm, half a mile from the picturesque hamlet of Sheldon, and 7 miles from Honiton. Situated within the Blackdown Hills, and made from weathered pine logs, this unusual holiday home has an open plan living area, a woodburner in a large inglenook fireplace, and a covered veranda ideal for an evening drink and BBQ. Walk the woods and country lanes in peace, explore the region's beautiful countryside and visitor attractions, or fish in the nearby lake and enjoy grilled trout for supper on the veranda, before being lulled to sleep by the sound of running water. It's the perfect country escape.

The Hills are a nationally important landscape and were designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in recognition of the special qualities of its natural and built environment. Being relatively unspoilt, the Hills offer a rare sense of timelessness. A network of hedges, mature hedgerow trees and small copses link a rich mosaic of semi-natural habitats. The area is perfect for walks, cycling and horse riding where the quiet bridleways and byways offer many opportunities to explore and enjoy the locally distinctive buildings, archaeological remains and natural flora and fauna. Sheldon is centrally located to explore attractions further away, such as the City of Exeter with its ancient Cathedral, High Street shopping and arts centres. Historic Honiton is also nearby, giving you a chance to find out more about the honey exports that gave the town its name and, a few miles south, you'll find the unspoilt beaches of Exmouth and the rest of the Jurassic Coast.

Lovely fire and a peaceful getaway.

However the property itself did not end up being what we hoped. The property was not very clean at all, there were dead bugs by the kitchen sink, and we even found one in our bedroom drawer. It was very dusty, one of us is asthmatic and was coughing and sneezing throughout the stay. As we arrived, we noticed that the property smelt of cigarettes and wet dog. We appreciate that it is a dog friendly property, but as people who have grown up with dogs, we know this smell can be controlled. We had half a toilet roll to last the week, and this inevitably run out, we had to buy our own, along with our own hand soap. The hot water ran out and resulted in cold showers. There were no curtains in the kitchen/living room area; we felt very exposed and as we were staying on someone’s property and there were people walking around the land. This was very uncomfortable for us.
