Guests say

The Log Cabin offers a peaceful, technology-free retreat surrounded by beautiful countryside and abundant wildlife, making it ideal for those seeking relaxation and seclusion. Guests appreciate the cosy log burner, well-equipped kitchen, and dog-friendly environment. The location is praised for its tranquillity and proximity to local attractions. While the cabin is basic and rustic, most found it clean and comfortable, though some noted the need for updates to mattresses and general maintenance. The friendly and helpful owner is frequently mentioned, and the fishing opportunities are a bonus for many visitors.

Most guests found the cabin clean and tidy, with several positive mentions of cleanliness. However, a minority reported issues such as dust, dead insects, and stained bedding, indicating some inconsistency in cleaning standards.

The location is widely praised for its peaceful, secluded setting amidst nature, with beautiful views and easy access to local towns and attractions. The rural approach is noted as challenging by a few, but overall, the setting is a major highlight.

Guests generally found the cabin cosy, especially with the log burner, but comfort is let down by repeated complaints about old, lumpy mattresses and low or uncomfortable furniture. Some found the accommodation basic but adequate for a restful stay.

The cabin is described as basic but well-equipped, with a good kitchen and excellent shower. Some guests noted missing items (e.g., hairdryer, kitchen scissors), sparse utensils, and a need for maintenance or refurbishment in places.

The owner is frequently described as friendly, welcoming, and helpful, sometimes providing fishing rods or fly fishing lessons. While some guests received thoughtful gestures, please note that such gifts or extras are not guaranteed for all stays.

About this property

Sheldon 0.5 miles. A real rustic retreat! An atmospheric log cabin in a valley on the edge of peaceful woodland, within the grounds of the owner's trout farm, half a mile from the picturesque hamlet of Sheldon, and 7 miles from Honiton. Situated within the Blackdown Hills, and made from weathered pine logs, this unusual holiday home has an open plan living area, a woodburner in a large inglenook fireplace, and a covered veranda ideal for an evening drink and BBQ. Walk the woods and country lanes in peace, explore the region's beautiful countryside and visitor attractions, or fish in the nearby lake and enjoy grilled trout for supper on the veranda, before being lulled to sleep by the sound of running water. It's the perfect country escape.

The Hills are a nationally important landscape and were designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in recognition of the special qualities of its natural and built environment. Being relatively unspoilt, the Hills offer a rare sense of timelessness. A network of hedges, mature hedgerow trees and small copses link a rich mosaic of semi-natural habitats. The area is perfect for walks, cycling and horse riding where the quiet bridleways and byways offer many opportunities to explore and enjoy the locally distinctive buildings, archaeological remains and natural flora and fauna. Sheldon is centrally located to explore attractions further away, such as the City of Exeter with its ancient Cathedral, High Street shopping and arts centres. Historic Honiton is also nearby, giving you a chance to find out more about the honey exports that gave the town its name and, a few miles south, you'll find the unspoilt beaches of Exmouth and the rest of the Jurassic Coast.

BUT it really needs a deep clean and some maintenance. The location is beautiful and the lakes and grounds well kept. However, the lodge however is not. It is in urgent need of a bit of maintenance, decoration and cleaning. Such a shame as this could be a fantastic holiday location for those seeking peace and quiet but the accommodation is just neglected and poorly looked after.

Log burner a real treat. Had a lovely stay. My dog enjoyed it too. Owner helpful when I needed more logs and very pleasant.
