Hole Farm in Devon is cherished for its historical charm, quirky character, and spaciousness, accommodating large groups and families. The property's idyllic location and beautiful garden are frequently praised, as is the well-equipped kitchen with its AGA cooker. Guests enjoy the cosy atmosphere, particularly the log fire, and the property's suitability for multi-generational gatherings. While some guests mention maintenance issues and the need for modernisation, the unique experience of staying in such a historic building often outweighs these concerns.
The majority of guests found Hole Farm to be clean and well-maintained, with only a few isolated comments on cobwebs and maintenance issues. The presence of fresh flowers and the overall tidiness contributed to a high cleanliness rating.
The location is highly regarded for its peacefulness and proximity to Chagford and Dartmoor National Park. Guests appreciate the scenic surroundings and the opportunity to explore the countryside, although some note the narrow lanes can be challenging at night.
Guests generally find the property comfortable, with its spacious rooms and cosy log fire. However, some guests mention issues with water pressure and uneven stairs, which slightly affect the comfort score.
The property's facilities, such as the AGA cooker and ample parking, are well-received. Nonetheless, there are several mentions of maintenance issues, including the need for updates to appliances and concerns about water pressure, which impact the facilities score.
While many reviews express gratitude for the experience and mention the property's charm and equipment, there is no specific reference to gifts or extra thoughtful touches provided by the hosts. Therefore, a score cannot be given for thoughtfulness.
Two miles from the centre of the friendly little Dartmoor town of Chagford, this ancient thatched Devon longhouse sits in its old original farmyard, (no farm animals are kept around the property),now a courtyard surrounded by barns. Built in medieval times and full of history, it is listed and has amazing ancient features and, since it comes with a cottage in the courtyard, provides flexible accommodation for couples and groups of friends. An ancient oak door leads you into the cross passage, with utility room and bathroom in the lower part of the house where animals once dozed. The sitting room is stunning, with traditional open fire in a huge inglenook fireplace and old panelled walls. Off this is a quiet study with jigsaws and games and a finely tuned Piano. The kitchen is typical of an old farmhouse with big dining table in the centre and modern electric Aga. Two staircases lead you upstairs to four simple, restful bedrooms with white walls and uneven wood floors. The sense of history here is amazing, with a wonderful atmosphere. Outside, the cottage provides a lovely space for anyone who wants peace or independence, with its own kitchen with dining area, sitting room with wood burning stove and two upstairs bedrooms with a bathroom. Outside, there is plenty of space to wander and dream with a big lawn garden, which does have a 5ft drop so keep an eye on the children, surrounded by 130 acres of traditional Devon fields. If you come with a group, why not make a party by arranging to hire the medieval threshing barn across the courtyard, which makes a fine space for a banquet or revel? (suggested for summer months only) With Dartmoor on the doorstep, this is a great place for walking, cycling or touring the area, or wander the streets of Chagford or Okehampton with little shops and friendly pubs and eateries. Visit Castle Drogo or head to the cathedral city of Exeter. Whatever your hopes and dreams for your Devon holiday, Hole Farm is a very special place to stay, and perfect for small groups.

The property is becoming tired and unloved. Stains on ceilings plaster coming off walls over the floor in lounge and main bedroom. Lack of water pressure in cottage baths and showers difficult as is washing machine which also has dodgy door. Shippon padlocked so no access to any washing machines nor could I get to electrics when power outed many times. Phone not working couldn't contact caretaker spiders and cobwebs in most corners. Mould around many windows stained wood in hall and en suite and lounge. Broken soap dish in shippon bathroom. Filthy fire extinguisher. Out of date PAT test. Chairs with little padding are uncomfortable both log baskets have significant holes burnt ceiling from spotlight lounge. Bathroom "part re tiled" old mismatched tiles still present. Rusty metal heater bathroom. Broken night store heater. Rusty bin bathroom. It's never been perfect and I understand that with a house of that age. In the past we have put up with broken boiler Internet mice piano delivery roof thatchers etc and never complained as we all work in the industry and experience issues but most of this could be delt with so easily. Most annoyingly being banned previously for the woman' on the horse and HER dogs defecating in the yard! We really don't feel that £1700 is a good price for the property it's the most we have paid and the house and facilities are way less than our previous experiences. I have photos of most of the issues should the owner like to see them. I understand management remotely is difficult. I have not shared on social media and look forward to a response.

Everyone in our group loved the age and quirkiness of the house while appreciating the modern conveniences as well. My friends, family and I have been to Hole Farm many times over the years and have always enjoyed our time there.

However we were relieved to spend a week with out falling down stairs. Clients must be aware of multiple trip hazards.
