There is plenty of off road parking and safe areas to leave bicycles, plus use of the station café which serves hearty breakfasts, lunches and afternoon teas, guaranteed to provide an energy boost for a good day’s cycling or walking on Dartmoor. The station platform is available for guests to use, an ideal place to sit and reflect on days gone by when the railway was in full commercial use. Now its claim to fame is the famous Polar Express winter service, and the 15 minute weekend train service to Meldon, a wonderful place to alight and take a walk to Meldon Reservoir, surrounded by open moorland and with breathtaking views and plenty of wildlife.
Okehampton is a 10 minute walk from the station with an historic castle, Museum of Dartmoor Life, and Victorian shopping arcade. A short drive will take you to a variety of visitor attractions, including Dingles Steam Village and The Dingles Fairground Heritage Centre and Finch Foundry. Also nearby is Castle Drogo, a National Trust property which is dramatically situated above the River Teign. A must in this area is a trip to discover both the north coast, where you can visit places such as Bude and Widemouth Bay, and the south coast to discover areas such as Exmouth and Teignmouth. Okehampton is a busy market town on the edge of the Dartmoor National Park and near the highest and most dramatic areas of the moor, where Yes Tor rises to a height above 2000 feet. Okehampton has a prominent medieval castle overlooking a wooded river valley, the Museum of Dartmoor Life (where Tourist Information can be found) and Okehampton train station, which has been restored to its 1950s glory running trains along a scenic route to Meldon the highest station in southern England.
