The Carriage House in Devon is consistently praised for its beautiful setting, tasteful decor, and well-equipped amenities. Guests appreciate the secluded woodland location with stunning views, while still being close to Lyme Regis. The property offers a warm, welcoming atmosphere, and despite some minor maintenance issues, it is highly regarded for its comfort and cleanliness.
Guests frequently commend the property for its cleanliness, with one review from a family experienced in holiday home cleaning rating it very highly. No negative comments about cleanliness were noted.
The location is celebrated for its seclusion, woodland surroundings, and proximity to Lyme Regis. The views and peacefulness are particularly appreciated, although some guests mentioned the garden is not fully secure for dogs.
The property is described as cosy, with underfloor heating and comfortable furnishings. Some guests mentioned issues with water pressure and garden steps, but these did not significantly detract from the overall comfort.
Facilities are generally well-received, with the property being well-equipped. However, some guests pointed out minor maintenance issues such as a toaster not fully working and a lack of secure garden for pets, which affects the score.
While guests have mentioned a welcome pack and the property being well-stocked, there is insufficient information to determine if gifts are consistently provided or if their presence significantly contributed to the guest experience. Therefore, a score cannot be given.
The Carriage House is an exceptional, Grade II listed building located in Uplyme, a village set within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, just a short drive from the popular seaside town of Lyme Regis and the UNESCO World Heritage Jurassic Coast.
Situated in a private woodland setting, this former carriage house for the main residence has been lovingly restored and imaginatively configured to an impressive holiday home sleeping up to eight guests.
The house is approached by a long sweeping drive taking you through the impressive grounds, with electric gates opening and welcoming you to the property, where you will find three off-road parking spaces, and a further space located in a separate car parking area situated in the grounds.
The spacious open-plan living area has been arranged with distinctive spaces, including a sumptuous seating area featuring large floor to ceiling windows and doors that flood the room with light, and perfectly capture the distant sea and coastline views.
For the cooler evenings, a woodburning stove provides a homely feel and makes a charming feature in this room. The kitchen is a well-equipped and stylish space, again adorned with many exquisite touches, with the large dining table a great spot to enjoy mealtimes together.
For a quieter moment, there is a separate snug with TV and seating in what was originally the carriage section from where the house derives its name.
The bedrooms are arranged over two floors, with two of the bedrooms, a king-size and a double located on the ground-floor. The king-size bedroom is a fantastic room with doors that open into the garden giving a delightful outlook to your surroundings.
The adjoining bathroom has both a free-standing bath and large walk-in shower, again styled beautifully. The double bedroom is a charming room, with exposed stonework and a shower room conveniently located next to it.
The other two bedrooms are located on the first-floor, reached by a hand-crafted staircase. With vaulted ceilings and feature windows, one is a large king-size bedroom, whereas the other is a family room with both a double and single bed, with the family bathroom housing a feature roll top bath and walk-in shower also located on this floor.
The house is situated in an impressive woodland garden with several outdoor areas sympathetically positioned nearby for you to make the most of your surroundings. Step down from the lounge to an adjoining decked seating area which has been furnished with relaxed style seating and a low table that creates an informal setting ideal for an evening drink.
A sunken patio area has been adorned with inviting garden seating and sun loungers, perfect for making the most of the good weather. The owners have thoughtfully added a large outdoor dining table, ideal for alfresco dining, as well as an outdoor pool table allowing guests to fully embrace the great outdoors when the sun is shining.
The grounds themselves are a delight, linking up with popular footpaths, the nearby nature reserve at Trinity Hill or into the village of Uplyme itself, with its shop and village pub.
From Uplyme, there is a riverside walk from the village into Lyme Regis with its family-friendly beaches, independent shops and galleries, along with must see attractions including the iconic Cobb Harbour and Aquarium. Popular days out include Charmouth, where you can try your hand at fossil hunting on the beach or learning about the area’s rich history at the Heritage Coast Centre.
Further afield, the pretty fishing village of Beer is also an excellent day out, with its quaint streets and art galleries, or why not partake in a pint of local beer at the aptly named Barrel of Beer, in Beer!
Visitors to Seaton can hop on the tram for a scenic ride along the River Axe estuary through nature reserves to the town of Colyton or take a leisurely stroll around the wetlands centre, nearly 4km of level trails and boardwalk through beautiful marshland and reed beds alongside the river, which itself is home to an abundance of wildlife.
For a truly memorable holiday on the stunning Jurassic Coast, the Carriage House is the ideal choice.
The beautiful countryside surrounding the village of Uplyme, on the borders of Devon and Dorset, is a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, criss-crossed by bridleways and footpaths including the East Devon Way, and providing perfect country walks and superb views. The area was chosen by TV chef Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall for his River Cottage HQ at Park Farm, where you can treat yourself to a great meal. Just a short drive takes you to the stunning Jurassic Coast at Lyme Regis. This delightful historic seaside town boasts a maze of narrow streets, with an interesting array of shops and cafes, whilst the sandy beach lends itself to great bathing and watersports, and the bustling little harbour offers regular fishing trips, or try your hand at fossil hunting. Within an easy drive is the quaint town of Axminster, or how about a ride on the Seaton Tramway? A glorious location for a varied and interesting holiday.

Absolute amazing place in every way. The only suggestion I would make is that the heating was timed and had to wait until 7pm for evening heat. Not the best in November but if you take logs you can light wood burner earlier. Cannot recommend enough. Thank you.
Heidi
The house has everything you could wish for with amenities and when we needed to phone the agents for the electrics and plumbing, they came out super quick. We had seven adults, a baby and a dog and it perfect with plenty of room. The beds were so comfortable and the decor was beautiful. Lyme Regis was not far away by car and a beautiful seaside destiniation. We will definitely stay again!
Dave
The house is very well equipped and has quality touches to the decor. Water flow upstairs for the shower and taps is inconsistent. We had a great and comfortable time and were pleased with our choice. Also the owner contacted us prior to arrival with a potential problem, which was sorted before we arrived, which indicates the concern they have for renters to have a good stay. Thank you.
