About this property

Bruton Lodge is a converted Victorian stable with plenty of its original character still in place. Exposed stone, old oak beams and flagstone floors sit alongside richer colour, tactile fabrics and contemporary furnishings, creating a country home that feels considered without being overly polished.

The vaulted living room is an easy place to settle in, with comfortable seating gathered around the log burner. Next door, the kitchen centres around a marble island, with an AEG double oven and Smeg fridge for those planning to cook properly. Meals can move through to the dining room, where an antique tapestry and long walnut table create a relaxed setting for up to eight.

There are three individually designed ensuite bedrooms, all with Vispring mattresses, with two offering the flexibility of super-king or twin beds. An additional sofa bed allows the lodge to sleep up to eight guests.

Outside, the private walled garden has a stone terrace for breakfasts, lunches and evenings outdoors. A large private gym adds another useful dimension to a stay, while underfloor heating and the log burner make Bruton Lodge equally appealing when Somerset calls for a weekend spent mostly indoors.

Bruton Lodge sits at Great Elm, well placed for exploring a corner of Somerset where good food, art and handsome market towns are rarely far away.

Frome is around ten minutes away, with independent shops, cafés and a food scene worth making plans around. Rye Bakery Cafe is an easy morning stop, while The High Pavement and Bistro Lotte are among the town’s established addresses.

Bruton, around fifteen minutes away, has become one of Somerset’s most interesting small towns. Hauser & Wirth Somerset provides the cultural draw, while its increasingly ambitious food scene includes Osip, Briar and The Old Pharmacy.

Closer still is Mells, where stone cottages and old village streets lead to The Talbot Inn, a fifteenth-century coaching inn and an excellent choice for a long pub lunch.

There is plenty within reach for a fuller day out, too. Bath is around half an hour away for Georgian architecture, galleries and restaurants, while Wells, Glastonbury and Stourhead are all accessible. The Newt in Somerset is another worthwhile excursion, bringing together gardens, food and design in one rather well-executed day out.

It means days here can be as loosely planned as they should be: coffee in Frome, an afternoon at Hauser & Wirth, dinner in Bruton or simply back to Bruton Lodge with something good for supper.
