Hillway Lodge in Withypool is praised for its stunning views, cosy atmosphere, and friendly owner. Guests appreciate the thoughtful touches, such as homemade cake and fresh flowers. The location offers spectacular scenery and is ideal for rural retreats. The property is well-suited for families and provides a comfortable stay, though some guests suggest it could benefit from modernisation and improved cleanliness in certain areas.
Guests have indicated that the main areas of the cottage are kept cosy and comfortable, but there are remarks about cleanliness under the beds needing improvement. Overall, the property seems to be maintained to a good standard of cleanliness, though attention to detail in less visible areas could be enhanced.
The location is consistently described as stunning and spectacular, offering direct access to the moor and beautiful views, even on wet days. The remote and rural setting is highly valued by guests seeking tranquillity and natural beauty.
The property is referred to as cosy and comfortable, with a large double bed and fresh linens mentioned positively. Storage heaters are noted to keep the space warm, though the comfort of an unused twin room is not commented on, suggesting a generally comfortable experience.
While the property offers a range of facilities, guests have reported issues such as a non-working dishwasher and the absence of a washing machine. The Wi-Fi service is limited, and some maintenance issues with doors have been noted. However, the kitchen and bath facilities are well-received.
The owner's thoughtfulness is highlighted through gestures like a homemade cake, fresh flowers, and a basket of eggs. These personal touches contribute to the property's charm, although it should be noted that such gifts, while delightful, may not be provided with every stay.
Hillway Lodge, near Withypool, perches on the side of the combe above the Barle Valley enjoying stunning views across the countryside and farmland to Withypool Common. Sleeps up to 6 guests in 3 bedrooms and welcomes horses and up to 2 dogs. One mile to the village with pub, shop and tea rooms.
The fitted kitchen has a fridge, cooker, dishwasher and microwave oven - all the essentials.
In the open-plan living room you'll probably be distracted by the views across the valley and up to Withypool Hill, but there is a modest TV, plus DVD, CD/radio/cassette, books and games. Wifi/broadband is available but please don't expect ultra-fast fibre speed.
The family bathroom has a shower over the bath, a toilet and hand basin.
Bed linen and towels are provided.
The property is well insulated with double-glazed windows and has night-store heating. Electricity is included. The water supply is from the farm's own borehole.
Guests are requested to refrain from smoking inside the cottage.

We enjoyed a very comfortable week tucked away in a perfect location, with gorgeous views from every room, and the veranda. Gillian was very kind and welcoming. The walking straight out from the driveway was excellent. No need to use the car all week as withypool was a nice walk down hill and has a nice pub, a very welcoming tea shop, and local store. We would definitely like to return, hopefully with friends.

Such beautiful surroundings, great views from the house and patio and such an utterly charming space with lots of literature on what to do in the area. And a very sweet helpful and kind host. Had a fabulous stay - wish we could have stayed longer. The village shop/post office is good for all your needs and very friendly too and the Royal Oak does great food!

Huge double bed with fresh white cotton sheets and white fluffy towels delighted me, while my wife loved the bath and the large kitchen. The four children we had to stay of mixed ages had a ball and Gillian was most tolerant of them this up and down and the drive, as well floating her pieces of wood down her little stream. The ponies loved their luxury stables and their grazing. The walks out to Tarr Steps and Simonsbath were the stuff dreams are made of. The local pub is finding its feet a little with new owners but is friendly and tolerant of young. The shop keeper was most helpful, and his shop, though outwardly tiny, was a Tardis inside, offering a better selection of local foods than any other shop we found locally. Wonderful break thank you Gillian. And outstanding value for money.
