This smart cottage is converted with its three neighbours from a cider barn 1½ miles from Stoke Gabriel. Grade II listed, the beams and stone pillars have been charmingly preserved and paired with modern comforts to create beautiful accommodation. Leave coats, boots and maybe your damp dogs in the hall, then head through to the roomy open plan living space with its oak floor, comfy seating and door to the private courtyard for alfresco meals. Head on upstairs to the three bedrooms, all looking over neighbouring orchards which would once have grown the apples which were turned into cider in this cottage. Now you can see geese, hens and pheasants scratching amongst the trees, and you can still buy a refreshing flagon of local cider nearby. Your little courtyard patio is enclosed and partly covered and you can hear the brook over the wall as you eat at the table. This is an area of beautiful, peaceful countryside and the village is a lovely place to explore, with its welcoming pubs, shops, restaurant and quay where you can drop your crablines and watch the boats. Totnes, Brixham and Dartmouth are all interesting old towns where you can also while away hours watching traditional life unfold peacefully around you. For splendid houses and gardens, head to National Trust Coleton Fishacre or Agatha Christie’s Greenway which are both fascinating. Beaches are a must of course in this area of beautiful coastline and Torbay will have all the seaside fun and sand you could wish for. Wassail Cottage, named after the historic cider making custom, is a lovely peaceful base for exploring South Devon.
