For dining alfresco and appreciating the panoramic views, the rear terrace has outdoor seating overlooking the water, as well as plenty of storage room for bikes or hiking gear. Shotley Gate is home to pubs for delicious dinners out, a Post Office shop for the essentials and Shotley Heritage Park for exploring the local landscape and wildlife. If you can tear yourself away from this idyllic property, there is plenty to explore in the surrounding area; Ipswich is a busier town with a variety of shops and eateries to try, along with popular sights such as the spectacular Christchurch Park and Mansion, and the picturesque waterfront where you can take boat trips along the river. For a traditional seaside town, pack your towels and head to Felixstowe for sandy beaches and pastel coloured beach huts, where visitors can stroll through the Seafront Gardens or enjoy a game of golf at Ferry Golf Club. The historic Harwich is easily accessible from Shotley Gate via the ferry, where you will find an abundance of restaurants and cafés, the Blue Flag Dovercourt Beach, or for history enthusiasts, visit the Harwich Museum located inside a fort built in 1808 and the Victorian Halfpenny Pier. In a great location for escaping the hustle and bustle, whilst a short journey away from busier towns, The Admirals Retreat is a wonderful dwelling for holidaymakers to call home.

A settlement on the tip of the Shotley peninsula, Shotley Gate is a small village overlooking the Rivers Stour and Orwell. There is a Post Office with a shop, a few pubs and impressive views across to Felixstowe docks. The view was an ever changing vista and watching the dinghies racing from the sailing club was a bonus. Pub within walking distance. The Shotley marina was fabulous and the walk around it was amazing. We had a superb week made even better by beautiful weather (except one day). Thank you Katie for you help and thank you Tracy for letting us use your wonderful house.

  • Andrew

Quiet (even in peak season) with extensive views of the Stour, especially to the west, from the large balcony and terrace. Traditional pub with good food just 2 minutes walk, 10 minutes walk to Harbour Ferry jetty with boats to Harwich and Felixstowe. Altogether highly recommended.
