Tollgate Cottage is a charming and well-equipped holiday home, praised for its cleanliness, comfort, and excellent access to local walks, nature reserves, and the coast. Guests appreciate the proximity to a friendly pub and the beautiful views over the marshes. The cottage is particularly popular with dog owners. Some guests note the convenience of the location for exploring the area, though several mention that the nearby A12 road can be noisy, especially in the garden or front rooms. Occasional maintenance issues and garden upkeep are mentioned, but overall, guests enjoy their stay and many return.
The majority of reviews highlight the cottage as very clean and well-presented, with several guests specifically praising the cleanliness of bedrooms and living areas. A few minor comments mention dirty curtains, but these are outweighed by positive feedback.
The location is ideal for exploring the coast, nature reserves, and local towns, with excellent walks from the doorstep. However, the proximity to the A12 is frequently mentioned as a source of noise, which detracts from the otherwise favourable setting.
Guests generally find the cottage comfortable, warm, and cosy, with good beds and a relaxing lounge. Some mention issues with single beds and noise from the road affecting sleep, but overall comfort is rated highly.
The cottage is well-equipped with everything needed for a pleasant stay, including kitchen amenities and secure garden space for dogs. Some guests note maintenance issues such as garden furniture, shower fittings, and the need for clearer instructions for appliances.
Many guests appreciated welcome gifts such as wine, biscuits, and dog treats, though it should be noted these are not guaranteed. The inclusion of these touches is frequently mentioned as a highlight of the stay.

It is tucked away alongside the A12 which runs the length of the Suffolk Heritage Coast making it the ideal spot for those wishing to explore this Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. In the village you will find a popular pub and walks including those by the famous church. The legend of the Black Shuck, a ghostly black dog, dates back to 1577 and has been immortalised in songs and folk legend. The church itself is an incredible structure, overlooking the Blyth Valley.
Public transport is superb here and you can get into the ever popular Southwold to enjoy all the quintessential town has to offer with ease. From its independent shops, brightly coloured beach huts and traditional pier, it’s easy to see why this coastal town is a holiday hot spot all year round. Walberswick is also an excellent must see during your visit. Crabbing here is the sport of choice and it will keep kids entertained all day. All you need is a line, a bucket and bacon (we hear smoked bacon is the preferred kind!).
This is also a dog friendly area with endless woodland and beach walks. A trip to Dunwich and the woods are highly recommended. With a much needed pub at the end of the route this is a destination ideal for both summer and winter getaways. RSPB Minsmere is also close by with incredible sighting of rare species reported by birdwatchers. Beach 3 miles. Shop 2 miles, pub and restaurant 50 yards.

Lovely cottage with plenty of room. As we came from GY end we couldn’t see the turning so took a while to find! Fabulous shower! Wi fi & TV were a challenge but we got there in the end! Would be helpful to include instructions for both in the Tollgate Cottage info book. Garden furniture not good but we didn’t need it as garden too noisy to sit out. Although the reviews stated “near” the A12 we didn’t realise it was the other side of the fence! When doors & windows were shut it was quiet indoors. We had the “Heatwave week” so the use of a fan would have been very welcome. Perhaps something to think about for future holidaymakers. Walks by the estuary are near & handy for taking the dogs & thankfully there was usually a cool breeze there. Nice view from the kitchen window where I enjoyed watching the rabbits, pheasants & even a kingfisher. Pub nextdoor ok but very limited menu. All in all we had an enjoyable stay. ☺️
