Conveniently situated in the charming town of Mytholmroyd in Bronte country, Ted’s House is a deceptively spacious and welcoming end of terrace house, the childhood home of the former Poet Laureate, Ted Hughes. Hughes lived here until the age of seven with his older brother and sister. Before his death in 1998 he said "My first seven years shaped everything". Camping trips with his elder brother in the rolling moors and countryside is said to have significantly influenced his poetry, making this the ideal holiday home for budding writers or Hughes’ fans to draw inspiration from the area.
Beautifully designed and furnished by an interior designer, the house has been fully renovated to incorporate a beautiful bathroom and a further en-suite shower room, making it perfect for couples sharing. The owner has thoughtfully provided a desk in Ted’s former second floor bedroom - the perfect spot to return to after exploring the area. There is a small cellar which is suitable for the storage of bikes, boots etc. There is a ginnel to the rear of the property (i.e. access for bikes), and on street parking on a first come, first served basis to the front and side of the property for 2 cars.

Ted's House is an end terrace in Mytholmroyd, near to the canal. There are local shops for everything you need, but a short walk (1.5 miles) away along the tow path is Hebden Bridge. Thursday is a great day to go because of the excellent market for those special food items. I would recommend Goo Cheese shop, which seems to be open every day, for its excellent selection and quality of cheeses. We had a couple of lunches at Laila's Kitchen. Very good vegetarian, vegan and gluten free lunches at pleasing prices.Halifax is well worth a visit, which again has an excellent indoor market and the 'Piece Hall'.Having lived my early years in the Calder Valley most of the time was spent revisiting old haunts and walking across the moors.I would recommend you use booklets, leaflets (and reliable internet sites) etc to plan your walks. There are so many paths on the OS maps that it is difficult to tell which could be reliably taken without hinderance.The house was very clean. It has a bathroom, shower room (with a hand basin) off the main bedroom and a separate toilet with a hand basin, so ideal for a two couples sharing. The stairs seem fairly steep, especially if you have not lived in a hundred+ year old terrace before.We had a lovely week. And we had very little rain during the days we were there.

The house was serviceable for our short stay, but I would not return or recommend. We didnt find it particularly clean, although it was tiday. The furniture and decor was outdated. The windows downstairs did not appear to open so it was very stuffy. The attic room had two metal beds which felt unstable and creaked. The roof window couldn't be opened when raining, so again it was a stuffy room. Overall experience wasn't welcoming - every holiday let i've stayed in has at least provided a pint of milk - there wasn't anything offered, but thankfully a local shop was within a short walk.
