The Engine Room is part of Scalegill Mill, which was built in 1795 as a cotton mill. One of eight properties, it forms a small quiet community and is located in the heart of the picturesque Yorkshire Dales National Park.
The living space of The Engine Room is open plan with wonderful views of the countryside. The décor is colourful, warm and fun, with pieces of attractive artwork and large feature mirrors. There are two colourful velvet Chesterfield-style sofas and a matching chair, plus a large gas log-effect fire. Spot the glass porthole showing the water which used to run under the mill. From the dining room, with its large table for up to 6 guests, there is an amazing, large hobbit-style hole built into the mill wall which leads to the main hallway. Believe it or not, there is a Series 2 1978 Land Rover built into the wall as a cupboard with working tailgate lights.

On the ground floor is a kingsize room with touch lamps, a relaxation area with cushions and double doors leading to a decked area overlooking the river, hillside and woodland. On the lower ground floor, there are two more fantastically fun and quirky bedrooms. The kingsize room has a woodland theme, with touch lamps again, a dressing area and en-suite wet room with shower and colourful lights. The third bedroom has a bunk bed, lovely artwork and more fun features.
Set in idyllic surroundings, with 8 acres of shared gardens and woodland, which is host to many wonderful species of birds and wildlife. There are heron’s, otters, kingfishers, dippers and sometimes deer that may be spotted in the woodland.
Guests can enjoy exploring the footpaths through the woodland and around the mill pond which leads to the National Park Footpath, this can then take you to Malham. There are so many beautiful walks in the surrounding area and an abundance of great shops, markets, pubs and restaurants in places such as Grassington, Skipton and Settle, all around a 25-minute drive away.

The Engine Room was a lovely base to use for our stay. The host's contact was swift and friendly, with lots of very useful information about the area to help us.The accommodation is quirky, well-equipped and comfortable. Our party aged across three generations, and it suited us well, as we are all fit enough to negotiate the multi-levels of the property, but I can see that anyone who struggles with steps might find it difficult. The setting of the apartment is glorious. With the Pennine Way passing the property and a river flowing next to the drive, there is good access to local sights such as Malham Cove, Skipton Castle, a number of waterfalls and caverns, both on foot and in the car.

The love and care that has gone into The Engine Room is exceptional. We felt privileged to stay somewhere so unusual and special. The engineer in our family absolutely loved it, and there’s a real sense of novelty for the kids too. It’s wonderful to stay somewhere on holiday that is so completely out of the ordinary. The longer we stayed, the more we appreciated the little touches and incredible level of detail that had gone into making The Engine Room so comfortable and welcoming. The views are stunning, with the beautiful Yorkshire Dales walks right on the doorstep. The local community is welcoming, and our host’s friendliness made the stay even more special. We were lucky enough to have sunshine throughout our visit, but I can imagine The Engine Room would be just as lovely on a rainy day, with cosy evenings in and family meals around the table. We absolutely loved our stay and would not hesitate to recommend. A genuinely unique and memorable place to stay.

We loved every minute of our weeks stay at the Engine Room and did not want to leave! The owners have put their heart and soul into this place and you can tell from the minute you step foot inside. Its beautifully quirky interior is bright and welcoming with so many lovely features to discover, we loved all the lighting, the porthole and the old engine and its history. We cooked in most nights and there was everything we needed. The rooms are beautifully presented with gorgeous views. The location is just stunning, right by the river - a super place to really get away from it all and enjoy the nature and countryside living - we saw owls, deer, herons, wagtails to name a few - the otters remained elusive !! So many wonderful places to visit in the area - Malham Cove, Janets Foss, Gordale Scar walkable from the front door as well of plenty of other walks. We also visited Bolton Abbey, Ingleton Waterfall Trail, Malham Tarn. The communication from Stephen and Lisa is second to none and they sent us a huge list of places to visit and recommended restaurants. It was lovely to meet Stephen on our arrival. 100% recommend staying here but dont wait too long as one day the owners will make it their home again and you will miss out!! Thank you so much for a wonderful stay!
