About this property

Pickering 4.3 miles. Located in the unspoilt village of Newton-on-Rawcliffe near Pickering, North Yorkshire is Gateside, a delightful cottage offering reverse-level living. The cottage, formerly an 18th-century threshing barn, enjoys a prime location in the North York Moors National Park and offers an enclosed garden, a homely sitting room bordered by A-frame beams with woodburning stove and flexible sleeping arrangements for five guests. The property has three bedrooms (a double, a twin and a single), a sitting room, a kitchen with dining area, and a family bathroom with bath and shower over. Outside there is an enclosed, lawned garden and there are two designated parking spaces in the courtyard behind the property. Gateside is an ideal base from which to explore all that the North York Moors and the surrounding area have to offer. There are many local walks and cycle rides, or you can take a journey on the North Yorkshire Moors steam railway through the stunning National Park countryside to the coast. The North Yorkshire coast is also within reach by car or bus, including the bustling seaside towns of Whitby and Scarborough (around 20 miles), as is the medieval walled city of York (around 30 miles). Other local attractions include Dalby Forest (a designated Dark Sky Discovery site), Flamingo Land Theme Park and Zoo, Castle Howard, Rievaulx Abbey, Helmsley Castle and Walled Garden, and the Cleveland Way. There is a pub in the village and a wide variety of shops and supermarkets in the market town of Pickering just 4 miles away.

This old market town serves as the official entrance to the stunning North York Moors National Park, the location of the Heartbeat countryside, with its full complement of facilities and traditional shops, cafes, pubs, and restaurants. Take a journey on the North Yorkshire Moors Steam Railway and visit some of the areas where The Philosopher's Stone was filmed if you're a Harry Potter fan! The Beck Isle Museum, which features a distinctive collection of black and white photography and exhibits of rural life, is also highly recommended. The North York Moors' rolling hills, valleys, rivers, and abundance of animals provide walkers with a wealth of options, while York City and the Heritage Coast are both within a half-hour drive. Overall, a great location for a peaceful holiday. Please note : Bookings to begin on a Friday or Monday only.

We felt the kitchen let it down - in need of a deep clean.

The property was comfortable and the kitchen was well-equipped. We would have appreciated some things that were omitted, but that are generally expected nowadays: - pillow protectors - soap in the bathroom - washing-up liquid - a hand towel each so that we can wash our hair - some milk and a few teabags

Great wi-fi for the kids, which isn't usually very good generally in holiday cottages, in our experience. Well placed for days out in York, Whitby, Scarborough etc. Eden Camp was particularly good to visit. Plenty of towels and lovely bedding, very comfortable beds and pillows. Good local pub very close by and just beyond that, after the houses, a good walk. Only slight criticism, if any, would be that a small welcome tray would be beneficial with some tea/coffee, small pint of milk. A loo roll would also have be good just while people get settled before going for a shop. We've had a tray in every other place we have stayed and for a small outlay it makes a huge difference after a long drive. However, I would highly recommend Gateside, and would definitely stay again.
