About this property

In association with Trinity House, we are proud to present Vanguard at Whitby Lighthouse.

This attractive cottage on the Whitby Lighthouse site has sitting room, kitchen/dining room, double bedroom, twin bedroom, single bedroom, bathroom and shower room. Features include oil central heating, electric wood burner, electric hob and oven.

Vanguard is one of two holiday cottages available at the lighthouse, which lies on the East Coast just outside Whitby and close to the North Yorkshire Moors. Also on this site is Galatea, sleeping five guests.

The High Cliffs of the North Yorkshire coast hide a number of small ports, the most significant of which is Whitby. Captain James Cook was apprenticed to a Whitby shipowner and made the first of his voyages of discovery (1768-1771) in a covered Whitby built 'cat' - a small ship rigged collier renamed 'Endeavour'. Whitby's skyline is dominated by the ruins of St. Hilda's Abbey, high on Whitby's East Cliff and spreading below, a maze of alleyways and narrow streets running down to the busy quayside and harbour entrance. To the south lie the coastal villages and resorts of Scarborough, Filey and Bridlington. Inland lie the heather moorlands of the North Yorkshire Moors and, further afield, York.

Additional Information:

Children and infants welcome. Travel cot and highchair available on request.

Up to two well-behaved dogs are welcome (small additional charge). Dog owners, please be aware, although the garden is mostly walled or fenced, it is not entirely dog proof for determined pets!

There is no WiFi available at Vanguard and very limited mobile signal. A landline telephone is provided for UK and non-premium numbers only.

There is an internal step within the property.

Guests should be aware that the lighthouses and equipment need regular and sometimes emergency maintenance. Therefore visits by maintenance staff may occur at any time during the year. However, staff will do their best to ensure guest privacy at all times.

Guests are reminded they are renting a heritage building, therefore certain features such as steps, stairs and floor levels may not comply with that of a modern building. As such, we would advise guests to acquaint themselves with the premises on arrival and exercise caution accordingly.

Access roads to the lighthouse site are narrow with limited passing places and, dependent on the season and site, there is the possibility of overhanging vegetation due to cutting restrictions during bird breeding seasons or other environmental reasons.

A barbecue is not provided, however guests are welcome to bring their own, subject to adhering to the safety precautions set out in the arrival information.

Sorry, no fireworks, drones or remote controlled flying equipment are permitted.

Drivers with low axles should be aware that the site is approached via a farm track.

Sorry, charging of an electric car is not permitted.

I have always wanted to stay in a lighthouse this place ticked all the boxes for me the location, not too far to travel too from where we live 2 hour drive, this place is relaxing and a place to totally rewind, forget WiFi, and phone signals and what your Facebook friends had for tea, totally at peace here, it was a credit to the owners who take great care in this property, very clean, beds where comfy clean airy fresh feel about the place, sit back chill enjoy the sea air and lots of wild life on your doorstep and plenty of walks, deer, hares, barn owls, kestrels within yards from the light house. I would definitely come back again but next time stay longer my wife and pet dog enjoyed it too. Very happy and chilled stay, ps sorry about the WiFi and phone signal issue with some people it's a must I'm not bothered in the slightest, you can get a signal up the lane if you must. Enjoy your stay if you book I know I will when I return again.

We had a fantastic stay at the cottage. Location is absolutely superb for peace and quiet, but equally near to Whitby and Robin Hood’s Bay, both of which are our favourite places. We stayed 1st week of December and the cottage was lovely, cosy and warm. The welcome basket was a really nice touch and very much appreciated! All in all, this is a wonderful location and we will definitely be back.
