Guests say

Lion Cottage in Hinderwell is praised for its cleanliness, charming character, and quiet location, ideal for exploring the North Yorkshire coast and moors. Guests appreciate the well-equipped kitchen, comfortable beds, and the welcoming touches like wine and biscuits. Some concerns about steep stairs and lack of Wi-Fi are noted, but overall, the cottage offers a cosy and pleasant stay.

Guests consistently report that the cottage is very clean, with multiple reviews highlighting its spotlessness. The high level of cleanliness contributes significantly to the comfort and enjoyment of their stay.

The location is well-regarded for its proximity to local attractions, coastal walks, and quiet setting. However, some guests mention the inconvenience of roadside parking and the absence of a direct view from the garden, slightly affecting the score.

The cottage is frequently described as cosy and comfortable, particularly the beds. Some guests find the lounge sofa and the cottage's size less comfortable for larger groups or longer stays, which is reflected in the score.

While the cottage is equipped for a comfortable stay, guests suggest improvements in kitchen layout, larger saucepans, and the addition of Wi-Fi. The presence of a DVD player and smart TV are positives, but issues with maintenance and the lack of a washing machine are noted.

The mention of a welcome gift of wine and biscuits indicates thoughtfulness; however, as gifts are not consistently referenced across reviews, it is not possible to accurately score this category. It should be noted that such gifts are a kind gesture and not guaranteed.

Hinderwell is a small, lively village close to the fishing villages of Staithes and Runswick Bay. Hinderwell was mentioned in the Domesday Book as Hildrewell, a derivation of Hilda's Well, named for the Abbess of Whitby who was travelling through the parish in a drought and was asked to intercede. Her prayers were answered when a spring appeared near the sight of the present Parish Church, and this spring has continued to flow from the hillside to this day. The village is ideally situated for exploring the beautiful countryside, and walks, cycle ways, gliding, horse riding and fishing are all well catered for in the area. Whitby is seven miles away and the town has a rich and varied heritage waiting to be discovered. This is a fabulous holiday base.

For health reasons, we spent quite a bit of time at the cottage and it was well equipped for our needs. The village of Hinderwell has a lovely community feel and is within easy reach of several beaches and resorts.

No problems in car parking on the road. The local chip shop was great. Only slightly negative comment is that there is only a double bed, which for us was a bit small...husband is 6'4".
