Guests say

Guests have found 'Ships Bell' to be a charming and well-maintained cottage in the picturesque village of Staithes. The property boasts comfortable beds, clean bathrooms, and a prime location close to the sea and local amenities. While some guests mentioned low ceilings in the kitchen and minor maintenance issues, the overall experience was highly enjoyable, with the cottage's character and cleanliness being particularly appreciated.

The cottage was consistently described as very clean, with one exception of a mouldy wine glass found. The positive remarks about cleanliness in the majority of reviews suggest a high standard is typically maintained.

The location is highly praised for its proximity to the sea, local shops, and the beauty of Staithes. Guests appreciated the convenience and picturesque setting, indicating an excellent location.

Comfort is well-regarded with mentions of very comfortable beds and a cosy atmosphere. However, some guests noted low ceilings in the kitchen and drafts from the doors, slightly affecting the comfort score.

Facilities are generally good, with well-equipped bathrooms and a kitchen. However, there were several comments about maintenance issues like heating problems, lighting, and the need for additional kitchen utensils, which suggests room for improvement.

While some guests mentioned a lack of welcome pack or voucher, there is not enough consistent information about thoughtfulness in terms of gifts or extra touches to accurately score this category.

About this property

Resting in the quaint coastal town of Staithes in the North York Moors National Park is Ships Bell. This historic, stone-fronted property boasts charming characterful features including exposed stone walls and beams, three well-presented bedrooms and a woodburning stove, the perfect setting for families seeking a coastal getaway. After traversing North Yorkshire’s coastline enter to find a homely sitting room where you can warm your feet by the woodburning stove in front of the TV before heading to the lower-ground-floor to prepare a hearty meal in the fully-equipped kitchen. Dine together as a family at the table before climbing the stairs to wash off the day’s adventures in either the ground-floor shower room or sleek first-floor bathroom furnished with a claw foot bath. When sleep calls, rest up ahead of another adventure-filled day in one of three bedrooms; choose from a double, a second-floor double and a single. In the morning enjoy your evening coffee while marvelling at the view across Staithes from the small seating area at the front of the house. Then head into the heart of the town to stock up on essentials at the local store or treat your loved ones to a special meal or drinks at The Royal George or The Endeavour. Meander through Staithes’ charming cobbled streets to find the small, secluded beach and harbour where you can admire vistas of the North Sea. Venture further afield to Whitby to tour famous attractions including Whitby Abbey, the harbour, Captain Cook Memorial Museum and the Whale Bone Arch then indulge in the town’s famous fish and chips while strolling along its golden sands. The brave among you may dare to climb the infamous 199 steps or visit the Dracula Experience with live actors. Outdoor enthusiasts will be in their element as they can join the Cleveland Way which runs from Helmsley to the coast and down to Filey, totalling an impressive 110 miles. Delight in North Yorkshire’s attractions at Ships Bell.

A delight for artists, Staithes is a quaint, peaceful seaside town with cobblestone streets and narrow alleyways. A secluded sandy beach is nestled among the rocky shoreline, and the town's charming homes and cottages are grouped around the historic harbour and bordered by high, jagged cliffs on three sides. The community can claim ties to Captain Cook, who served as an apprentice to a draper close to the harbour. Today, Staithes, which boasts a decent selection of pubs, shops, and tea rooms, is a must-see for anyone travelling to the Yorkshire Coast. There is still an rnli lifeboat station in Staithes, along with a small fleet of cobles (fishing boats) that land fish, crab, and lobster. Boat trips are also offered for fishing, birdwatching, and even whale watching. Old Jack's Boat, a well-liked BBC children's television programme, was also filmed there. With an annual Art and Heritage Festival, galleries, and artist studios that frequently provide art classes and seminars, Staithes has a strong draw for artists. The network of ginnels (alleyways) is navigated by the free Illusion Trail, which also offers local trail guides. The Cleveland Way, which descends the cliff to the sea's edge, offers the best views of the town. All in all, a great starting point for touring the Yorkshire Coast, going to Whitby or Scarborough, or taking in the moorland settlements of the North York Moors National Park.

It had everything we needed and more. Great location for walking the dramatic coastline, lovely village with 2 good pubs!

The location is ideal, just tucked away off the main street in easy reach of everything. I was a little bit concerned about safety returning to the accommodation at night but that's because I live in London and not Staithes. It was absolutely fine! The accommodation itself was spotless. I usually wash plates, glasses, mugs, cutlery etc before using them when I rent a place but there was no need. The bed (on the first floor) was amazingly comfortable with beautiful soft linen. I didn't use the shower in the first floor bathroom but the one on the ground floor was amazing. Not only did it have great water pressure but it was double headed too, such luxury! The kitchen ceiling was low but I'm 5'10" and could stand upright inbetween the rafters. That's what you get in old properties like this, so no point moaning about it! I wish I could have stayed longer and would not hesitate to stay at Ships Bell again.

I did advise Sykes of some of these issues via the booking app but did not receive a response (and still have not). I could not phone due to lack of phone signal but the message facility should have been enough. *No logs/kindling even though stated included in price in the particulars *handle very loose on frying pan *no spare bin bags or kitchen roll *heating goes off regularly so has to be re-set and you cannot have heating and oven on at same time *upstairs shower drips from hand-held shower part *toilet roll holder in downstairs bathroom is very rusty *bird poo in the single bedroom at the top and on banister *sink in the kitchen is impossible to keep clean and frustrating to use/wooden worktops constantly wet and look awful *upstairs bathroom vent is very noisy when windy *even though there are two front doors the wind comes through them and creates a draft which is on your neck when sitting on the sofa *table lamp in the living room didn't work
