About this property

Fraserburgh 5.1 miles. Nestling in a beautiful rural location near Fraserburgh in Aberdeenshire, is this unique and spacious country house, Cortes House. Able to accommodate up to 30 people, the property is just perfect for large groups or family reunions or a gathering for a special event; the possibilities are endless. The sheer size and grandeur of Cortes House can be glimpsed from the drive up to the property and it just gets better and better as you enter the house. Built in 1810 the house boasts a wealth of regency period features which have been lovingly restored and which come to life as you wander through the living quarters where you can choose from the main sitting room, drawing room or snug, all of which offer a sumptuous yet welcoming ambience. Imagine gathering around a roaring log fire, cosying up on the opulent sofas and really making the most of quality time with friends and family. Despite the grandeur of the house it still manages to feel warm and inviting and nowhere more so than the spacious kitchen which is extremely well-equipped. For a truly wonderful backdrop to your fantastic culinary creations take a seat in the magnificent formal dining room which comfortably sits 30 people. The house might date back to the early 19th century but the entertainment is bang up to date with a dedicated games room with a table tennis table and a wonderful cinema room. By the time night falls you’ll be wanting to know where you are going to sleep and there is certainly no shortage of bedrooms and all are wonderfully appointed so choosing one will be hard though the king-size with the four-poster bed is always popular! Stepping outside Cortes House and the grounds are as impressive as the interior with sweeping lawns, well-maintained shrubberies and an attractive patio area all providing the ideal location for happy hours spent alfresco. There is even an obstacle course for the kids (and big kids!). It will be hard to leave Cortes House but there is so much to see and do in the region it would be a shame not to explore. There are some wonderful coastline and beaches to explore just a short distance away and the picturesque seaside town of Fraserburgh is just a short drive and has loads to offer its visitors including shops, bars and restaurants, an award-winning beach and a popular 18-hole golf course. The area is steeped in history with ‘Cortes’ actually a Celtic word for circle and there are loads of stone circles worth discovering some of which date back to the Bronze Age. Check out Memsie and Strichen which both boast fine examples of Celtic history and are a short drive from Cortes House. Aberdeen is not far and is a great place for a day trip with sites of historical interest and loads of shops perfect for picking up gifts to take home to loved ones. For a trip of a lifetime, a visit to Cortes House has to be top of your bucket list.

Fraserburgh is situated just along the north east coast from Aberdeen and borders the mouth of the Moray Firth. Whilst it is still a busy fishing port the number of boats has decreased dramatically over the years, although todays boats are far bigger than they were in bygone days. The town itself is a real community with a strong Football team and impressive 18 hole golf course, the 7th oldest club in the world believe it not, established in 1777. With its modern clubhouse vistors are most welcome and can enjoy the bar, dining room and lounge areas that overlook the course and sand dunes. The mueseum of Scottish Liighthouses is based in Fraserburgh and is well worth a visit and gives a real insight to the history of the Lighthouses in the north of Scotland. Fraserburgh is a beautiful seaside town with a rich history and an award winning beach. Inverallochy 18 hole golf course is within walking distance of Fraserburgh. Nearby is the rspb Loch of Strathbeg which is one of the best places for wildlife in the UK as well as Aden Country Park within easy reach with 230 acres of parkland to enjoy.

The location is good for the whole of NE Scotland, although the main road outside the property is used by fast traffic so has to be approached with care. There is plenty of space for sleeping, playing, working, chilling out and most importantly for simultaneous food preparation for fussy kids using the multiple sinks, fridges, dishwashers etc. The house was clean and well presented when we arrived. The grounds are lovely with space for games, barbequing, eating and exploring. The caretaker John was helpful and attentive. He was very friendly. There were some minor negatives we have already informed John about: The matresses are badly worn and need replacement. The timeswitch on the tumble dryer is broken - it didn't switch off. And small children have to be watched on the upper landings as the bannister rails are widely spaced. But thank you - we had a great holiday. Everyone loved it.

Helpful comment: Sat Nav took 3 out of 5 cars to the wrong Cortes House, up a v difficult farm track. Can this be solved?

Accommodation great. Not ideal for disabled people with the stairs. Dining room was fantastic for our family dinner and party. Only thing the kitchen, which was the hub of the house, could have had more work space for food preparation. Kids had the best time in the games room and tv room. Lots of space outdoors for our dog and kids to run about. A very enjoyable stay.
