About this property

Whether you’re seeking outdoor adventure, coastal air, or simply a quiet place to unwind, Rowantree Cottage offers a truly memorable Scottish getaway.

Rowantree Cottage, a charming former gamekeeper’s house built in 1896, is situated in a beautiful Glen up the Skyreburn Road, just west of Gatehouse of Fleet. In this picturesque setting in the Galloway hills, free from traffic noise and streetlights, on a clear night you will be amazed by the brilliance of the stars. Not far away is the Galloway Forest Park with its star park, one of the best sites to stargaze in Europe.

The garden is a haven for birdlife, and if you’re lucky, you may spot red squirrels darting through the trees and woodpeckers visiting the bird table. Wildflowers in season abound in the sssi field (Site of Special Scientific Interest), a protected area, it’s the perfect setting to rest, restore and immerse in nature.

The cottage blends modern comfort with its original character and charm. Inside, you’ll find a warm and welcoming home designed for relaxed family living; cosy evenings can be enjoyed by the open fire (with logs and coal provided) and meals prepared in the well-equipped open plan kitchen.

Step outside and you’re perfectly placed to explore. The stunning Solway coast lies just under three miles away, with wide sandy beaches ideal for swimming, walking, and water sports. For those who love the outdoors, hill walking begins right from the doorstep, while nearby lochs offer peaceful fishing spots. The Paradise Burn is through a safe gate at the rear of the garden.

Gatehouse of Fleet is 5 miles away with a small supermarket, pharmacy, deli, pubs, cafes, shops, tennis courts and golf course.

Adventure seekers will enjoy the renowned 7stanes mountain biking trails at Kirroughtree Forest, part of the spectacular Galloway Forest Park. Other options for the area include Glentrool and Ae Forest.

Charming local towns are just a short drive away. Discover the artistic flair of Kirkcudbright, browse independent food shops in Castle Douglas, or the book shops in Wigtown.

The cottage is in a lovely location with a fenced in garden ideal for dogs to run around in. There are some other cottages dotted around but none in view of the cottage which has great views of the beautiful scenery and is lovely and the area is lovely and quiet at night. Would be ideal for stargazing on a clear night. There is a drive up to the gates around the cottage through a large field which had a bull wandering around in it so be aware if you walk through the field and maybe keep your dog on the lead when you’re in there! The cottage itself was very nice, lots of space, a big kitchen with everything you need and great for bird watching on the feeders outside. Bathrooms were good with a nice shower. The beds were comfortable, possibly some feather pillows/duvets which I can sometimes be allergic to but was fine on this occasion. Plenty of space in the bedrooms too. The living area was cosy and comfortable. The cottage comes with some specific rules about keeping all dogs downstairs and off the furniture which was fine for us but might be more challenging with other dogs so be aware. Overall the place was clean, comfortable and peaceful, a great place to relax and with a sense of being cut off from the rest of the world, while still being a short drive away from amenities, shops etc. It a beautiful location too, great scenery and views.

The cottage is a bit tired (just) in a few places but overall well equipped, albeit a strange kitchen layout. Lovely location where we saw every bit of wildlife going either in the garden or the adjacent field. Whilst we love the solitude a DVD player would have been nice for evening entertainment. Our border collie absolutely loved it and despite the minor moans we would definitely make a return visit, the area is simply beautiful
