About this property

Built as a fortified Laird’s house, to an L-plan design, this impressive stand-alone seventeenth-century tower house is located in a rolling countryside setting with outstanding views across the Glenkens. Particular castle-like features include the winding turnpike stairs, walls that are four foot thick and the large Inglenook fireplace in the first floor Great Hall. Over the door is a panel bearing the arms of MacLellan and Gordon, with the date of 1648, when the tower house was built. The annexe section was added at a later date.

On entering at ground floor level is the beautiful traditional country kitchen with dining area, making this room the hub of the castle. On the first floor, there is the Great Hall, with inglenook fireplace and open fire, comfortable seating and a TV. The bedrooms and bathrooms can be found elsewhere, with one on the first floor of the annexe section, whilst the rest of the accommodation is located on the second and third floors of the castle section. There is parking available to the side and rear of the castle. Weddings are currently not allowed, except for groups of 9 who are using the castle on a normal booking basis. This is an ideal base to have a family holiday to discover Dumfries and Galloway area and be part of the history of this castle.

The drawing-room, with an Inglenook open fire and views to the front, is a large expansive room, with a selection of comfortable sofas and chairs. Located on the first floor, this room would have been the Great Hall and provides a large space for the group to relax in. With a wooden floor and low beamed ceiling, there is an authentic atmosphere of bygone times, whilst today’s modern needs are catered for with a TV and a broadband connection.

At ground level is a beautiful traditional country kitchen with dining area. The kitchen has an AGA and an electric oven, grill and hob for the cooking requirements, with a microwave, large fridge freezer and dishwasher. There is a table which can seat up to 10 people comfortably, allowing for fine feasts or simple suppers in some style.

Beyond the covered rear porch in the annexe section, there is a utility area with a washing machine and tumble dryer available.

*** Please note that the castle walls are 4 foot thick and can cause difficulties in reception with Broadband and mobile phone usage. Mobile phone coverage is limited.

There is a private water supply at this property, which is checked and approved on an annual basis by the local authority.

The fireplaces in the Great Hall can be used. There is a basket for logs beside the fireplace which will be full upon your arrival. If you require more wood, the person to contact is in the Visitor Information Manual and the charge will be approximately £10 per basket. The Castle is located in a rural setting, near a farm and some additional houses, which are all accessed off the one-kilometre long private road. Surrounded by grounds and some lawn, there is plenty of space available here and on the private Estate. Located 24 miles from Dumfries and 15 miles from Castle Douglas, there is a village store a few miles away, whilst Castle Douglas has a major supermarket.

Galloway Forest Park is nearby there is plenty to entertain in the way of activities, including walking, biking and horse riding. Loch Ken offers a range of water sport activities. For those looking for some sites of interest, there are Threave Castle and Cardoness Castle. Bladnoch Distillery is the nearest distillery.

There are pleasant walks over the Estate along the level track to Barscobe Loch or woodland paths to discover the impressive waterfalls in Garple Glen (watch the path edges) and for the fit a rough walk to the top of Barscobe Hill giving panoramic views over the countryside (enjoy the view while you catch your breath). Trout fishing is available on the Loch.

The Castle makes a great spot for stargazing, but more organised events arrangements for this may be found at Kiroughtree Visitor Centre in the Galloway Forest Dark Sky Park itself. The Park also provides superb opportunities for enjoying all outdoor pursuits such as walking mountain biking and wonderful wildlife including Red Deer, Red Kites, if lucky a Golden Eagle, kingfishers, Otters and many more. The nearby Solway coast boasts many quiet and peaceful beaches, together with all the water sports that you would expect. Loch Ken, just 5 miles, has specialist centres for water-skiing, sailing and water-based activity centre.

The local area provides much of interest for days out including historical sites such as Threave Castle, Castle Douglas, Dumfries House, Cumnock or following the various Rabbie Burns trails. Taking time to explore the small Galloway towns like New Galloway, just 4 miles away on the other side of the valley or Kirkcudbright on the Dee Estuary is also well worth doing. The Castle

This house is perfect for our group when we make our annual visit, 14 people has been our largest group, we faced no challenges and enjoyed our stay immensely. It is a very cosy and comfortable house of generous size, exactly as the photos show. We would not hesitate to recommend it!

The property was well prepared and all in order, warm on arrival (and this was February). The castle is cleverly designed inside with comfortable cooking and eating, arrangements, the great hall made a super place for the family to relax together, and the bedrooms and bathrooms provided all we expected and needed.

Lovely spacious old property, but had to do a bit of our own cleaning (eg the garden furniture was filthy, but we cleaned it up, and the barbecue was too dirty for us to use. (Obviously the owners didn't expect the weather in Scotland to be that good that we could sit outside soaking up the sun all day!) The housekeeper was very friendly and polite.
