Dumfries, known as Queen of the South and county town to the region of Dumfries and Galloway, enjoys a rich and varied history, with links to numerous people of note. The Scottish poet Rabbie Burns lived, worked and died at Burns House, which has now become a place of pilgrimage for Burns enthusiasts from around the world, retaining much of its eighteenth-century character and many relics once belonging to the poet. Additionally, Ellisland Farm, also a previous home of Burns and now a museum, is located just outside Dumfries, at Auldgirth near Dunscore. Further down the River Nith, but still in Dumfries itself is Moat Brae, inspiration behind the children's classic Peter Pan by J M Barrie. Recently renovated and opened to the public in 2019 the house is a museum and national centre for children's literature, with an educational discovery garden featuring a tea room and art installations. The surrounding area also boasts many beautiful castles but, most especially, a trip to Threave and Caerlaverock will never disappoint.

The shopping is a mx of some of the usual chains making an appearance, plus a selection of independent gift type shops. The nearby towns of Castle Douglas, the region's 'Food Town' and Kirkcudbright, Artist Town and home of Edward Atkinson Hornel of Glasgow Boy fame, are also great for original gift ideas.

The local countryside is a haven for wildlife of all kinds but is particularly favoured by red kite and squirrels, and migratory birds like barnacle geese and osprey. Viewing hides are available now at many locations including Caerlaverock Wildlife and Wetland Trust, just along the coast from Dumfries, rspb Mersehead by Southwick, Ken Dee Marches near Laurieston and Eskrigg Nature Reserve at Lockerbie.

Great for both parking and walking into town. Nice and clean. Good to have the owners next door so any problems or advice on the doorstep

Excellent base for exploring the surrounding area, which for us included the Robert Burns House and Centre in Dumfries, Caerlaverock Castle and Nature Reserve, Kirkcudbright, Logan Botanical Gardens, Mull of Galloway, Samye Ling Temple in Eskdalemuir, Carlisle, and Edinburgh. The accommodation itself exceeded our expectations in terms of spaciousness and comfort, with a lovely garden at the back. The host was also very accommodating. Hopefully, we'll be back at some point again in the future.
