About this property

An original 18th-century fisherman’s cottage with magnificent views over the Solway Estuary with wood-burning stove and wheelchair access.. Peacefully set with panoramic views over countryside to the Nith Estuary, these detached, single-storey holiday cottages have their own garden and have been furnished and equipped to the STB’s ‘4 Star’ standard. Conheath Gatelodge is a traditional delightful and cosy Georgian cottage with many original features, whilst Martha’s Shore Cottage has magnificent views over the Solway Estuary from one side and was an original fisherman’s cottage dating back to 1700. Generations of Martha’s artistic family lived here and her father was the stone mason for the farm estate, and cut stone for the owner’s farmhouse. There are lovely riverside walks from the door with abundant birds and wildlife to spot. There are many quiet roads ideal for cycling, and excellent wildfowl salt-marshes surrounding Caerlaverock Castle, 3 miles away. Solway Firth is easily accessible. Dumfries, 3 miles, has good shopping, restaurants, cinema and sports facilities. Sandy beaches, quaint fishing villages, castles and nature reserves within easy reach. Shop/P.O. and good village pub ½ mile.. Ramp to entrance.

Stayed at Martha’s cottage many times now, has all the facilities that my disabled wife needs, these facilities are very difficult to find, many advise wheelchair accessible but when you look at photos you can get in with a wheelchair but once you in, can’t get in the shower as has step or no shower just bath, Low toilet with no hand rails, just because they stat wheelchair accessible does not mean they have facilities for disabled person, Martha’s does we will be going back in September

Been going fairly regularly since 2011 when it opened. Love the location and condition of the cottage. Owner always visits early in the stay to check all is OK. (It always is.) A decent village shop would be good, for ordinary stuff like bread, milk, etc, but as we often go through Dumfries on daily travelling there are big supermarkets. Good local pub food, restaurants. Take binoculars. Easy to get to, but on quiet lane. Hope to go again next year.
