Why visit Glasgow?

While Glasgow is famed for its Victorian and art nouveau architecture and rich trade and shipbuilding history, the city is now known as a national cultural hub. Home to institutions such as the Scottish Ballet, Scottish Opera and National Theatre of Scotland, Glasgow boasts a wide variety of excellent museums, galleries and a buzzing music scene.

Why not start your visit by hopping on a City Sightseeing bus tour? You and your crew can discover all the sites and attractions of Glasgow from the comfort of a double-decker, open-top bus. Hop on and off to discover Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, The Riverside Museum, Glasgow Cathedral, the University of Glasgow, and much more.

Glasgow was the UK's first UNESCO City of Music and there's lots to see for music fans. Discover the amazing urban art on the City Centre Mural Trail, or catch a live performance at one of the city's famed venues including The Barrowlands and King Tut's Wah Wah Hut.

The city is also home to the biggest concentration of work by Charles Rennie Mackintosh. You can check out his Art Nouveau style at Mackintosh House, House for an Art Lover and Mackintosh at the Willow.

No trip to Glasgow is complete without a visit to the stunning Botanic Gardens. You and your gang can relax and wander the 50 acres of parkland in the heart of the west end. There's a Victorian glasshouse filled with exotic trees, plus various other glasshouses with rare orchids and other beautiful flora. If you're feeling energetic, walk along the path and go on the riverside walk.

Fancy a breath of fresh air? Head to Pollock Country Park on the southern outskirts of the city. Spanning over 360 acres, this natural escape is idyllic and offers the chance to spot herds of Highland cows, woodland glades, gardens and tranquil parkland.

There's so much to see and do in Glasgow that you'll only wish your trip could last longer!

What our customers say about their holidays

  • Chris And Georgina - Verified booking

The first thing that strikes you on arrival at Portnellan is the fantastic view from The Old Farmhouse.

The ever-changing scenery encompassing Loch Lomond (only 200 yards away) with a backdrop of hills and mountains, including majestic Ben Lomond itself, is quite breath-taking. You can be assured of the warmest of welcomes on arrival together with a sumptuous and delicious ‘welcome pack’, including a loaf of David’s home-baked bread and pancakes, home-made jam, Scottish oatcakes and a wee dram of local whisky! The Old Farmhouse is extremely well-equipped and comfortable throughout; our super-king bed with crisp linen ensured a good night’s sleep, but we could hardly wait to be waking up to THAT view every morning! Portnellan is a working organic beef farm and so you may see cattle in the yard behind the farmhouse and David and Freda (often accompanied by their two friendly dogs) about the place. It is also worth pointing out that Portnellan is somewhat remote being a couple of miles from the nearest main road; a real plus for us as it is beautifully quiet and the night sky away from all light pollution is something to behold on a clear night. A farm walk with David gives you a fascinating insight into what Portnellan Farm means to them. Don’t forget to pack your ‘wellies’! One, if not THE, highlight of our week was a two hour speedboat trip with Chris. Such a memorable experience and Chris is a brilliant guide with a vast knowledge of the loch; the history, topography and wildlife as well as what each of the islands on the Loch has to offer. It is far more than just holiday accommodation; it offers a unique experience in an idyllic setting and we definitely intend to return in the very near future.

For over 20 years we've had at least two holidays each year with our two children (now aged 20 and 21) in the UK and abroad and have always preferred to go self catering, staying in a variety of apartments, cottages, houses and villas.

We spend a considerable amount of time researching properties, looking at websites and reading reviews as we are quite particular and place great emphasis on finding somewhere very special to rent for the duration of our holiday. We have, therefore, stayed in some beautiful holiday homes over the years. However, we all agree (yes the kids too!) that The Old Farm House has to be "the icing on the cake" - it really is the most amazing property we've ever stayed in: the house was so beautifully presented, so immaculately clean and better equipped than we could ever have imagined. The website has some superb photos of the house and its interior so there's no need to go on too much about the individual rooms other than EVERY room is fab - the kitchen, bathrooms, bedrooms etc. The lovely owners, Freda and David Scott-Parks, have really thought of everything when designing the house and have so obviously gone out of their way to make their guests visit as perfect as can be. So many lovely touches were provided: freshly baked pancakes with butter and home-made jam on arrival, fresh flowers in each bedroom (colours coordinating with the blinds and throws on the beds), beautiful quality bed linen and towels - the list is endless! We had a very busy week sightseeing but what made our week special and so memorable was the very lovely Scott-Parks and their stunning house with its amazing views over Loch Lomond - thank you both SO much for looking after us so well - we certainly hope to return one day!

At the end of June 2019 we were with five adults a week on holiday in 'The Old Farmhouse', Gartocharn, Loch Lomond.

It was a fantastic holiday. The house is very quietly located, and has a fully equipped kitchen-dining area, it has three spacious bedrooms and two bathrooms. On our arrival we were welcomed by Chris, the son of the house. David, Chris and Freda (our hosts, and hostess), are incredibly sweet and friendly people. The terrace at the front of the house, is wonderful to enjoy a sunset. The cottage is a good base for a city visit to Glasgow or Stirling. There is also no lack of hiking opportunities: Ben Lomond, The Whangie, Conic Hill, Primrose Hill (Loch katrine), Aberfoyle (queen elizabeth forest park)..... A trip on the speedboat of Chris is an absolute must. We even used his services twice. Once to take us to Rowardennan for the start of a hike. And a second time to observe a beautiful sunset from the lake. Chris is an excellent boater, and has an enormous knowledge of the history, culture and the fauna and flora of Loch Lomond and the islands. In this house, you can really enjoy and relax. This holiday cottage is highly recommended. We certainly want to visit it a second time , because there is so much more to discover in this region of Scotland. Thank you David, Chris and Freda, for your hospitality. It is a real pleasure to stay in this nice and cozy cottage. Ludo, Marleen, Fons, Rita, Chris (Flanders, Belgium)

    Wonderful property.

Warm and spotlessly clean. Easy to make your own, very workable kitchen. Excellent communication. The property is easy to find using info given and it is clear on the ‘maps’ app. The road in from the village takes a few minutes and is single track, our vehicles managed no problem. Welcome basket was very thoughtful, jam was delicious, bread got eaten very quickly! You also kindly left some gluten free treats for the coeliacs in our party. The views from the cottage were amazing and you could watch the day and the weather across the loch and the mountains. We had glorious autumnal weather and an amazing show of the northern lights one evening, very special. We cooked for ourselves each evening and sampled some of the organic beef from the farm. We enjoyed the minced beef, lorne sausage and sausages. It was absolutely delicious and cooked well. We spent the whole week in close proximity to the farm venturing to Balloch, Luss, Balmaha climbing Ben Lomond and Conic Hill. The facilities at the farm to use the loch for water sports, kayaking and paddle boarding etc is all set up with easy access we just never got the chance to use it or have David take us out in his boat. Maybe next time! All in all a fabulous property with caring hosts. Thank you.

We spent one week of our holiday at The old Farmhouse in June 2017.

We have stayed in a number of holiday cottages in Scotland during the last 10 years but this is one of the most comfortable and well equipped (including rubbish bags- only for insider!) places we have ever stayed in. The house is clearly lovingly looked after by its owners. Everything was perfect and our hosts David, Freda and Chris were so friendly and warm-hearted, that we felt 'at home' from the first minute of our stay. There were some delicious pancakes and self-made jam awaiting us on arrival and Freda gave us a warm welcome with her fresh self-made bread. We liked sitting on the front-deck and enjoying the magnificent views over Loch Lomond, talking to David about the farm and cruising with Chris on his speedboat. If you're looking for peace and quiet in both beautiful surroundings and accommodation we would definitely recommend The Old Farmhouse. We have stayed in many beautiful properties in Scotland but this is undoubtedly one of the best. We very much hope to return and perhaps there still will be cow, which was a new-born calf in June 2017, calling Stephanie. Georg, Elke,Stephanie, Heinz-Josef and Granny Maria from Germany
