Guests say

Rowan House offers a peaceful retreat surrounded by stunning wildlife and beautiful scenery, making it an ideal base for exploring the Ardnamurchan peninsula. Guests appreciate the spacious, well-equipped accommodation and the abundance of nature, including deer and pine martens in the garden. While the location is tranquil, some guests noted limited direct access to the loch and occasional maintenance or cleanliness issues. The property is particularly well-suited for families and groups seeking a comfortable, nature-filled getaway.

Most guests found the property comfortable and well-equipped, but some mentioned issues with dirty carpets, kitchen cleanliness, chipped crockery, and litter in the garden. These concerns suggest that while generally acceptable, cleanliness could be improved.

The location is widely praised for its tranquillity, wildlife, and proximity to natural attractions. However, some guests were disappointed by the lack of direct loch access and the need to use single-track roads, but overall, the setting is a major highlight.

Guests consistently mention comfortable beds and spacious accommodation, suitable for families and groups. Some noted the house can get quite warm, and a few suggested mattresses could be updated, but overall comfort is rated highly.

The cottage is described as well-equipped, with a good kitchen and plenty of fuel for the wood burner. Some guests noted the lack of a balloon whisk, only one shower for eight people, and occasional power or water issues, but facilities generally meet expectations.

Hosts are described as helpful, and bottled water was provided during a water issue. While some guests appreciated these touches, gifts or special extras are not guaranteed and are not consistently mentioned.

Please note, however, that there is no waterfront access directly in front of the property, but there are plenty of places along the peninsula to access the loch, including a short walk to the end of the bay. Advice on where to access the loch can be found in the property. The rspb reserve at Glenborrodale is a birdwatcher’s paradise, with wood warblers, redstarts and spotted flycatchers often seen.

An abundance of wildlife can also be spotted, including whales, dolphins, otters, golden eagles and pine martens. Take a trip to Ardnamurchan Point lighthouse and visitor centre, explore the white sandy beaches at Sanna Bay, or visit the wonderful wildlife exhibition and café at Ardnamurchan Natural History Centre. Catch the foot ferry from nearby Salen to Tobermory on the Island of Mull, or there is a regular car ferry from Kilchoan to Tobermory.

The beautiful islands of Rum, Egg, Canna and Skye can be reached by ferry crossings from the small fishing port of Mallaig, or Kentra Bay, and the Singing Sands at Gortenfern make for a great day out. There are numerous ruined castles, gardens, museums, distilleries and galleries to explore, whilst Fort William, Glencoe and Oban are also accessible. Shop, pub and restaurant 3 miles.

Great House for a big party of people, we had 6 but it sleeps 8.The house was really hot, as we had to open the windows 100% of the time and that's even in April with the heating completely off.

Peaceful location and loads of wildlife on the doorstep. Spacious bedrooms, well equipped kitchen, loads of fuel for the wood burner. There was only the two of us staying but I imagine this would be a great property for families. A couple of things might discourage me from returning. Firstly the online description says “Rowan House is just yards from the rugged shores of Loch Sunart” - it is but there is no direct access to the loch from the property and instead the in-house information encourages you to walk several hundred yards up the road. The road has no pavement and has logging trucks driving up and down it. It wasn’t a good start to our holiday to find that the owners had been rather economical with the truth, especially as we’re keen swimmers. I think it would be better to be up-front about access to the loch. Secondly, when we visited, the tap water had been tested as unsafe to drink. Bottled water was provided but it’s easy to forget when you’re brushing your teeth etc. The last water test certificate was dated April 2024.

We were looking for a property in a quiet, nature-filled area, and Rowan House did not disappoint. The whole peninsula is beautiful and worthy of a longer visit than we could manage. But do bear in mind that the roads here tend to be single-track, so travel takes time. The Corran Ferry saves some time getting to the property, runs all day to 9:00 pm and costs £12 one way. Shops are few and far between, as are other facilities such as cafes/restaurants and medical facilities, should you require them. You might want to take supplies with you from Fort William, particularly out of season, from mid or late October. However, the fishmonger's weekly visit to the nearby Salen jetty, offering a wide selection of fresh seafood, is a godsend for any pescatarian! It was a shame that the planned power cut was not communicated to us before our travel. Along with a further unplanned power cut later in the week, the loss of two days at Rowan house from a one-week stay was disappointing. Because the water supply is private and powered by an electric pump, we were also unable to run water or flush a toilet. Had we known earlier, we could have brought flasks to prepare hot drinks. Perhaps the homeowner could add flasks to the inventory, as the nearest available hot food outlet at Glenuig (outwith the power cut areas) was a significant distance away.
