The Shore is a beautifully presented and spacious cottage in a peaceful, stunning location right by the sea, offering spectacular views over the Moray Firth. Guests consistently praise its cleanliness, well-equipped kitchen, and the relaxing atmosphere, with many describing it as a home from home. The property is ideal for exploring the Black Isle and enjoying local wildlife. While some mention minor issues with comfort, such as lounge seating and mattresses, the overall experience is overwhelmingly positive, with many guests eager to return.
Cleanliness is frequently highlighted, with guests describing the cottage as spotlessly clean and well maintained on arrival. Only rare, minor comments about marks on walls were noted, but these did not detract from the overall impression.
The location receives near-universal acclaim for its tranquillity, proximity to the sea, and beautiful views. Guests love the easy access to local walks, wildlife spotting, and nearby amenities, making it a standout feature.
Most guests find the cottage comfortable and cosy, especially praising the upstairs seating area and king-sized bed. However, some mention less comfortable lounge seating and mattresses, particularly in the downstairs bedroom, and note that the property may not suit those with reduced mobility.
The cottage is repeatedly described as extremely well equipped, especially the kitchen, with everything needed for self-catering. Minor maintenance issues, such as window mechanisms and the need for a fresh coat of paint in places, are mentioned but do not significantly impact the overall positive impression.
Guests appreciate thoughtful touches such as a telescope, responsive owners, and, in one instance, a bag of ground coffee provided after a query. Please note that such gifts or extras are not guaranteed for all guests.
The Shore is a traditional cottage that has been beautifully modernised to offer luxurious accommodation. Its location in wonderful Fortrose, right by the lapping shore of the Moray Firth is simply unbeatable.. Staycations honestly don’t come much better than The Shore in lovely Fortrose. It’s a dream of a holiday cottage and you will honestly love it.
Located in Fortrose, an historic, attractive Royal Burgh on the Black Isle, The Shore is a traditional cottage right beside the sea. A stone’s throw from the lapping Moray Firth, you have a very good chance of spotting bottlenose dolphins from the cottage - the resident pod that cruise these waters! The wee harbour of Fortrose is a slightly longer stone’s throw away and it’s where the sailing club is based. Within a few minutes’ walk you can be up a little footpath from The Shore and in the centre of charming Fortrose. A highlight is the amazing IV10 café/bar/deli that you’ll keep visiting during your stay - guaranteed!
The town is built around the beautiful red sandstone cathedral with current ruins dating back to the 1300s. Most of the building has fallen, but some fine architectural details do remain. Traditionally the seat of the bishops of Ross, Fortrose has seen a lot of wealth and therefore the buildings that make up the town are interesting and very attractive. It’s a lovely place to wander around. You’ll walk beyond the little town and explore Chanonry Ness, a sandy spit that juts out into the Moray Firth from Fortrose and the village of Rosemarkie a quarter of a mile to the north. The 15th oldest golf course in the world covers the spit and leads to the point where a Stevenson lighthouse stands.
Chanonry Point is the best spot to see the dolphins in these parts. The north side of the spit that leads back to Rosemarkie has a beautiful, long sandy beach. You can decide during your holiday which beach is your favourite: right outside the door of the cottage (at low tide!), or over in sandy Rosemarkie! Now you can stay at The Shore all week long and not venture far at all, but that would be a shame. You’re so very close to some amazing places in the Highlands. The Black Isle is on your doorstep and not far away the interior of the Scottish Highlands await exploration. Trailheads to Munros are within thirty minutes’ drive, and you can be in the Cairngorms National Park in 45 minutes. You also have lovely Inverness, the gateway to the Highlands only twenty minutes away.
The accommodation is finished to a very high standard. A historic cottage that has been modernised beautifully and perfect for a family to spend a week or two. We urge you to not hesitate in booking The Shore. It’s a truly fabulous holiday cottage that you’ll want to rebook as soon as you arrive! Pub within 1 mile..

Had a great week here. The location is excellent with the adjacent shoreline, view across the Firth and of the small harbour very close by. The cottage is clean, pleasantly decorated and furnished, and all you need for self catering. In 15 years of these stays around Scotland, this is one of the best we`ve been to. Recommended

The reason for average comfort was the seating in the lounge is not comfortable and it could do with a larger bed in the downstairs room. Apart from that it was lovely.

Lovely cottage though may not suit people with reduced mobility due to hill up to village. Spotlessly clean and well equipped though the double bed upstairs whilst not uncomfortable at the moment may need some improvement soon (we didn't use any others). Parking needs a little skill especially if cars have parked along the road but that only happened on two days we were there (and only for an hour or so on the second occasion). We would recommend and certainly we would return. Super responsive caretaker.
