Shore Cottage is true to its name, it is positioned right on the edge of Loch Hourn in the otherworldly village of Arnisdale. Its location is as Scottish Highlands as it comes with mountains, moorland and lochs galore. This place is an outdoor enthusiasts dream. From the front door you can kayak for hours on Loch Hourn, even crossing over the loch to the remote and wild Knoydart Peninsula. From the village you can walk up into the mountains, with a path leading to the munro Beinn Sgritheall standing high above the village at 974m.
The cottage itself is a traditional, heritage build. Upon entering this detached property via the front door, you have an inviting living room to the left with an open fire and large television. The other side of the house from the living room is the spacious kitchen/dining room. Off the kitchen is a utility and boot room with access to the rear of the cottage and heated drying rack. Also on the ground floor is a large family bathroom. Upstairs there are three bedrooms which are all fresh, white and have plenty of light. The gravel garden is fully enclosed at the rear, and there is folding garden furniture as well as a small portable barbecue.
Arnisdale is found at the end of a 10-mile single track road running south from Glenelg. It is one of the most remote outposts in mainland Scotland. The main road through Arnisdale is a gentle curving lane running parallel to the shingle beach. Beyond Arnisdale Lodge, which was built in 1898 by Valentine Fleming, father of Ian Fleming, author of the James Bond 007 books, the road continues half a mile to the village of Corran. You will find the attractive Ceilidh House and Heritage Centre which opened in 2008 and gives a history of the area. Arnisdale is a gateway to the mountainous Knoydart Peninsula. A boat can be arranged locally to take you across to golden sands of Barrisdale on the far side of Loch Hourn, from where Knoydart can be explored. Back towards Glenelg with its marvellous inn, there is a little track down to Sandaig and the memorial site of the cottage in which the author Gavin Maxwell lived whilst writing ’Ring of Bright Water’ in 1960. It is still magical place where otters can still be seen. In fact, wildlife can be spotted easily from Shore Cottage, with seals, porpoises and red deer frequently spotted and if you are lucky otters and pine martens. It is remote at Shore Cottage, but once you have arrived you will not want to leave. Shop, pub and restaurant 9 miles.
If you are tempted away then Skye is a short drive to Glenelg for the world famous turntable ferry across the narrow straights to Kylerhea on Skye. Shop, pub and restaurant 9 miles.

We have just returned from the most wonderful week at Shore Cottage and honestly didn’t want to leave.The location is simply breathtaking. Waking up each morning to uninterrupted views across the loch, with mountains all around, was something we’ll never forget. Even on the days when the weather wasn’t perfect, the scenery was absolutely stunning, and there was always something beautiful to watch from the windows or the shoreline.The cottage itself was clean, warm and incredibly well equipped. It felt like a real home rather than just a holiday let. The log burner made for cosy evenings after days exploring the Highlands, and the kitchen had absolutely everything we could possibly have needed. My other half is a chef, so we’re probably fussier than most when it comes to kitchens, but even he was impressed with how well stocked and practical it was.One of our favourite things about staying here was the wildlife. We watched seals from the beach outside the cottage, regularly saw red deer on our drives through the Highlands, and loved visiting the Highland cows grazing in the field just up the bay. It was exactly the authentic Scottish experience we’d hoped for.Although Shore Cottage feels wonderfully remote, the village of Glenelg has such a lovely sense of community. Everyone we met was incredibly friendly, always saying good morning and happy to stop for a chat or offer advice. The village shop stocks an impressive range of essentials and was perfect for anything we’d forgotten. We’d definitely recommend doing a larger supermarket shop before you arrive, but you’ll be pleasantly surprised by how well stocked the local shop is. We also had a fantastic meal at the Glenelg Inn, where both the food and hospitality were excellent.Most of the Highlands’ main attractions are around a two-hour drive away, so it’s worth planning your days. For us, though, that was all part of the adventure. Every drive offered another incredible view, and after a day exploring Skye, Loch Ness, Glenfinnan, Mallaig and the surrounding Highlands, it was always a pleasure to return to the peace and tranquillity of Shore Cottage. We couldn’t imagine staying anywhere else.Lisa was a fantastic host and made us feel so welcome. Her kindness really made our stay extra special, and we genuinely felt as though we were staying in a much-loved family home rather than just a holiday rental.If you’re looking to switch off, reconnect with nature and experience some of Scotland’s most spectacular scenery, I honestly couldn’t recommend Shore Cottage highly enough. We’ve made memories that will stay with us forever and would return in a heartbeat.Thank you, Lisa, for sharing your beautiful little piece of Scotland with us. Shore Cottage is a lovely cottage in a dream location. Lisa was very helpful at giving us all the information needed to make it an extra special stay. We recommend booking a boat trip with Peter, this information is in the welcome pack as well as much more.... We saw so much wildlife, including seals, buzzards, deer and though we didn't see dolphins on our trip we spoke to others who had. There are beautiful scenic walks from the doorstep and we definitely recommend going to the local store and pub in Glenelg, worth booking for dinner and excellent with food allergies. We also recommend using the turntable ferry to cross to The Isle of Skye, here you will also find a Co Op store if you need supplies, otherwise do stock up before you arrive at the cottage. The cottage is charming and comfortable and has everything you could need for a memorable stay. We will certainly be coming back to Shore Cottage. Thanks so much!
