The House on the Slip offers a truly unique and tranquil escape, set in a breathtaking location on the Isle of Skye with stunning wildlife views and direct access to nature. Guests consistently praise the peaceful setting, abundant wildlife, and the warm, knowledgeable owner. The cottage is cosy and well-equipped, making it ideal for those seeking seclusion and a break from modern life. While some mention areas for improvement in cleanliness and kitchen maintenance, the overall experience is overwhelmingly positive, with many guests eager to return.
Most guests found the cottage clean and comfortable, though a few noted areas needing more attention, such as bits in drawers, under beds, and some dog hairs. The kitchen and bathroom were occasionally mentioned as needing a deeper clean.
The location is widely celebrated for its stunning scenery, seclusion, and abundant wildlife. Guests loved the peaceful setting, though some noted the remote access via a single-track road and distance from shops.
The cottage is described as cosy, warm, and comfortable, with good beds and a welcoming atmosphere. Some mention restricted head height upstairs, but overall comfort is highly rated.
The cottage is well-equipped for a relaxing stay, but some guests noted dated kitchen appliances, chipped crockery, and a lack of sufficient cutlery for larger groups. Maintenance issues such as an old oven and unclear TV listing were also mentioned.
The owner is praised for being helpful, knowledgeable, and attentive, especially during adverse weather. While spring water was provided, no welcome gifts were mentioned, and guests should note that such gestures are not guaranteed.

The House on the Slip is the oldest house in Kylerhea and as per the name, sits on the point at Kylerhea and is a mere 10-12 feet from the “Hide Tide line”. There is nothing better than to sit in the sun room watching the tide come in, and hearing the waves as they hit the rocks right in front of your eyes. Sleeping upstairs can also be accompanied by listening to the loch and the surrounding wildlife. In the field behind the cottage are the owner’s Hebridean sheep, and back again are their two Shetland ponies. You really will have your own haven away from the hustle and bustle, as the cottage is at the end of a wee track so hearing traffic is a rarity.
The children will find their hideaways as they go along the shore. Throughout the day, you can watch the seals and otters in front of the house and the frequent visitors of the dolphins, porpoises and basking sharks. Above the sea, you can see the golden eagles that fly the high ridges above while the two resident sea eagles Victor and Orla rob the fish off the seagulls outside the patio doors.
The loch in front of the house is the Kylerhea Narrows, and you can get the small community-run turntable ferry over from Glenelg on the mainland. The first sailing is at 10AM, and the last sailing is between 6 and 7PM and is dependent on the season. Although there is no advance booking facility, the local ferrymen would not see anyone left behind!
Whilst walking around Kylerhea you can see roe deer, red deer, mink, pine martens, weasels, foxes, adders and alpacas. There really is something for all the family; teach the kids how to fly fish from the rocks and enjoy the fruits of your fishing for your meal. The views at night from the house are some of the best views you will ever see, a great spot for the Northern Lights. This is truly a holiday cottage that you and your family will remember and pass on the amazing stories to generations to come.

Beautiful cottage but for the less able could be an issue getting up either set of stairs. Found the drive too steep and problematic for small car. Could do with some new crockery . Be prepared for Midges from May onwards. However, on the plus, and there are many, so cosy and comfortable. Spectacular views and the wildlife is unbelievable. Seen things this week that most people would never see in a lifetime. David, the owner, lovely man, helped us to get the most from our stay and was easily available if required.

The directions to The house on the Slip and the House on the Point need to be updated. Although we were booked into the House on the Slip, the directions given took us to the other cottage, but those directions were wrong in that it said when we got to the green shed with the bins we were to turn right, in fact it was turn left. I also found the email received before we went on holiday, confusing because it mentioned both houses and so I wasn't entirely sure which cottage I had booked. Not long after we arrived at the House on the Slip a couple who had booked with Sykes had been given directions to our cottage although they were staying at the House on the Point.!! All rather confusing!!

Setting of house is lovely, right on the water's edge, picture window is fantastic in lounge and master bedroom. We had regular visits from a Pine Marten, Otter, Seal and Heron and saw lots of other wildlife during our stay. Beds were comfortable, and house was very cozy. May not suit those over 5 foot 10 as head height is quite restricted upstairs, particularly in the ensuite. Given house is supposed to sleep 6 it would be good to have more crockery and cutlery, had to keep washing things by hand despite the dishwasher as we kept running out and there was only 4 of us.Secluded location down 7 mile of single track road makes it a great place to escape the world. Can do walks to the rocky beach right from the house. Does make other parts of Skye a bit further away to explore but not impossible.Despite not allowing dogs at the property there seemed to be quite a lot of dog hairs around.Directions sent ahead of arrival took us to the associated "house on the shore" not the slip. Turn left at the post box not right. Owner has been trying to get this updated online.Listing did not make it clear the house has a private water supply, (which is treated and tested), but some may prefer bottled water and it is a long way to go to shop once you have arrived so better to know in advance. We had a power cut on our first night for around 16 hours following a storm, but the owner was great at keeping us informed of estimated reinstatement timelines. He also dropped off extra wood to keep us warm if we wanted to light the log burner.
