Guests say

Am Bathach in Sutherland receives glowing praise for its beautifully decorated, immaculately clean accommodation and exceptionally welcoming hosts. Guests highlight the peaceful, scenic location, thoughtful touches throughout, and the warm hospitality extended by Jennifer and Marcus. The cottage is well-equipped, cosy, and dog-friendly, making it ideal for a relaxing Highland escape. While a few minor issues are mentioned, such as kitchen utensils and occasional noise from heating, the overwhelmingly positive feedback emphasises comfort, attention to detail, and a memorable guest experience.

Cleanliness is consistently praised, with multiple guests describing the property as spotless, very clean, and well-maintained. Only one minor mention of hard mattresses, but no negative comments regarding cleanliness itself.

The location is widely appreciated for its tranquillity, beautiful scenery, and proximity to tourist spots. Some guests note the remoteness, which is generally seen as a positive, though one review mentions limited walking opportunities directly from the property.

Guests frequently mention the cottage's comfort, cosy atmosphere, and quality furnishings. Beds are generally described as comfortable, though a couple of guests found the mattresses a bit firm and noted steep stairs.

Facilities are highly rated, with the cottage described as well-equipped and thoughtfully provisioned. A few minor suggestions for kitchen items and comments about limited fridge/freezer space are noted, but do not detract significantly from the overall impression.

Guests repeatedly mention thoughtful touches such as welcome hampers, homemade cakes, and provisions on arrival. While these gestures are highly appreciated, it should be noted that such gifts are not guaranteed for every stay.

About this property

Situated in the very heart of Sutherland, the most northerly county on the British mainland and a world renowned area for its stunning scenery, wildlife, food and drink, Am Bathach is part of a traditional working croft where Hebridean Sheep can be seen grazing and running on the surrounding hills of heather.

The cottage is part of an extensive refurbishment carried out on the original cow barn using traditional stonework and cedar logs from Pioneer Log Homes of Canada. Tastefully decorated using local tweeds and traditional furnishings complemented by modern appliances used in a contemporary way.

The area is world renowned for its stunning scenery, wildlife, food and drink and friendly local communities. Not so well known is the low rainfall and mild climate due to the Atlantic Gulf Stream, with glorious summers and beautiful long sunsets throughout the year. The dark sky is a stunning sight with the stars clearly visible, particularly here in Altass.

The cottage is situated in the small hamlet of Rosehall which is surrounded by magnificent salmon fishing rivers and trout lochs, woodland walks and a welcoming local hotel serving delicious food.

A perfect base for touring, being based midway between west, north and east coasts, where the varied coastline is a magnet for wildlife and birdwatching.

One of our best places to stay in the Highlands! Jennifer and Mark were amazing hosts and made us feel incredibly welcomed. Upon arriving, we had a lovely hamper waiting for us with goodies in it, along with a delicious, homemade gingerbread cake! They had also stocked some essential breakfast items, such as eggs, juice, milk, tea, coffee, and more! The lodge was beautifully decorated and incredibly cozy, with many many personal touches that made you feel right at home. They put a lot of thought into making sure all guests have everything they need for both a short or long stay. All furniture, kitchen equipment, utensils, etc were high quality items. The beds were comfortable and included electric blankets, should you need them during extremely cold nights. The views from the back deck were gorgeous. Each morning we sat outside listening to the birds, having tea, and took in the incredible views. Yes, the lodge is located on a shooting range, but it was still incredibly quiet. It’s clay shooting and underground rifle range, and Jennifer and Mark will inform you of activities happening on the grounds in advance. We had the best sleep since it was so quiet and dark at night. If the sky is clear, it’s absolutely beautiful! We were also lucky enough to be invited to the village hall for a party and met several people who live in the area. They were all welcoming and we joined everyone in traditional dance and great folk music. Absolutely will remember our time here for many years and we hope to return someday! You won’t be disappointed staying here and will likely never want to leave!!!!
