Skelmorlie is a pretty coastal village in the west of Scotland, around 45 minutes from Glasgow. The house dates from 1906 and was built for a wealthy industrialist who spared no expense on his family's holiday home. It was designed to be a place to relax, entertain, and show off the owner's success and is one of the few remaining mansions in the area that has not been broken up into smaller parts. You can walk from the house to the local shop and village pub, the Eglington Bar, and you're under half a mile from Skelmorlie Golf Course and fishing lakes. Wemyss Bay is just over a mile or around a 15-minute walk from the house, putting you within easy reach of a mainline train to Glasgow and regular ferry service to picturesque Rothesay in the Isle of Bute, where you can see the collections and gardens at Mount Stuart.

Largs hosts a weekly farmers' market every Saturday. It's a lovely place to browse, pick up fresh ingredients for self-catering, and indulge in a sweet treat. Walk along the Victorian promenade to build an appetite for ice cream or fish and chips. Don't forget your Viksø helmet if you're there at the end of August - Largs host an annual Viking festival over the last weekend of the month to commemorate the 1263 Battle of Largs.

Balvonie House welcomes families and friends all year round. Children and dogs love the garden, which has lots of space to run and play and a stream to paddle and dam (you should supervise children at all times). Waitrose, Morrisons, Tesco and Sainsbury's deliver to the house if you want to arrange for groceries to be delivered after your arrival or as a top-up shop during your stay.
