Step into the country-style kitchen and there is everything you could possibly need for cooking up a storm and utilising some of the wonderful local produce available right on the doorstep.
The adjoining dining room is light and airy and the only thing that can distract you from your delicious meals here are the splendid views visible from the window. All three of the bedrooms also enjoy incredible views and there really is nowhere better to wake up than here; choose from a king-size, a twin and a single. Imagine jumping out of bed in the morning and breathing in that fresh Hebridean air before heading out for the day. On your return the beautiful, lush gardens await with views over the coast and beyond, making them the ideal location for chilling out and relaxing awhile.
There are stunning beaches within walking distance of the cottage and Eriskay is just a short but scenic drive. Here, there is access to more wonderful beaches, shops and a popular restaurant and is thought to be where Bonnie Prince Charlie first set foot on Scottish soil and the Bonnie Prince Charlie trail is popular all year round with visitors. From Barra, you can explore Mingulay, Vatersay and St Kilda, all renowned for their birds and wildlife. Castlebay is Barra’s large village so is definitely worth a visit. Here you will find lots of shops, bars and restaurants and the jewel in the crown of the village is the castle on its bay, Kisimul Castle which is accessed by a small ferry.
The perfect starting point for families looking to discover the wonderful Isle of Barra, Canna Cottage is just perfect. The islands can be reached by flights from Glasgow or Stornoway; or by ferry from Eriskay on South Uist, or Oban to Castlebay.
Borve is a village resting on the western side of the Isle of Lewis, close to the island’s main town of Stornoway. Reached by two adjacent bridges, it nestles on the River Borve and its name is derived from the old Norse word ‘borg’ meaning fort. It is known for the Clan Macquarrie rescue in 1953 when a Clan Line vessel ran aground in terrible gales and local men from the village rescued all 66 crew members. In recognition of the villagers’ bravery Clan Line donated funds for the construction of a village hall. There is a convenience store here and the Borve House Hotel great for stopping off for refreshment and a bite to eat. Just outside Borve there are loads of visitor attractions including the Butt of Lewis lighthouse and the Port of Ness Slipway and Breakwater which both offer breath-taking views over the ocean and beyond. Ness Historical Society offers a fascinating insight into the culture and history of the island and Stornoway is a short drive from the village which has a good selection of shops, cafes, galleries and restaurants and is the gateway to the exploring the rest of the Outer Hebrides.
