About this property

Tucked away in the rural setting of Mangersta in Uig, Isle of Lewis, is this delightful one-bedroom cottage, HONA.

Enjoying a peaceful and elevated position with sea views, and a bright and airy interior, Hona, a former mission hall, is the ideal location to explore the extraordinary landscape of Lewis.

Be greeted by a charming south facing decked area with picnic bench, perfect for alfresco dining or reading.

Step into the open-plan living space, where you will find an inviting sitting area with sofas and TV, and a well-equipped kitchen. Continue through to the cosy double bedroom, complete with its own ensuite shower room, so you can freshen up in style after a day of adventure.

Head straight for the beautiful beaches of Mangersta and Carnish, the latter is a feast for those who snorkel or the beach is a wonderful secret get away, the former is dramatic and full of energy where cormorants hang out on jagged rocks pounded by the surf. The high shell content of these beaches, make the sand luminous and the sea turquoise.

For an array of wonderful home baking, lunch at The Edge Café or Uig Community Café (neighbour to a quirky and informative local museum), or for an evening of fine dining head to Uig Sands with its epic views onto the bay. Groceries and crafts can be purchased at the exceptionally well stocked community shop,

For fascinating historic sites, continue onto the five-thousand-year-old Callanish Stone Circle and its newly refurbished visitor centre. Explore traditional crofting lifestyles at the preserved Blackhouse Village of Gearrannan, or the Blackhouse of Athol. Incorporate into walks the sites of ancient Viking mills, or the ribbed pattern of runrigs. Seatrek offer wonderful boat excursions to neighbouring islands or around the dramatic coastline. There are working tweed mills to visit and more besides, but the real star of the show is the landscape rich in flora and fauna – geologically gothic in some places, and sensuous pristine beaches in others.

Next stop is Stornoway, the main shopping hub of the island, home to the Lews Castle Museum & exquisitely kept grounds, the start of the Hebridean Way, and the ferry service over to Ullapool.

There is so much to see and do on a stay at Hona, which accepts one well behaved dog.

The islands can be reached by flights from Edinburgh, Glasgow or Inverness; or by ferry from Uig on Skye to Tarbert, or Ullapool to Stornoway.

Named after the Norse word for "bay," Uig is a small settlement on the western shore of the Isle of Lewis. It is well-known for its beautiful sand dunes and breathtaking vistas of the Atlantic Ocean. Attractions include the beautiful beaches of Valtos Peninsula and Mealista Beach, as well as refreshing walks along Berie and Ardroil sands, which are both rich in history (archaeologists have discovered ancient hut circles here, and the famous Lewis Chessmen were found here), and more contemporary activities, such as kiteboarding and windsurfing. The spectacular Uig Sands restaurant and the Loch Croistean Café, housed in a renovated schoolhouse, are both available to visitors during the appropriate seasons. Abhainn Dearg is also home to a distillery. In the Uig Community Shop, you can get all the basics. Visitors can go on a boat at Miavaig Pier, located just outside the settlement, to explore the surrounding islands.

We both came away from having a wonderful stay with our hearts calm by the experience.

The attention to detail was superb with some exquisite finishing touches and many examples of the owner's artwork dotted around. We particularly liked the easy reference cards and accompanying annotated map which gave us lots of ideas for things to do. I would not hesitate to recommend a stay here.

The cottage was perfect, our hosts were fabulous-welcoming and helpful. In the cotrage, there is everything you could want and more! The thought and care that has gone in to Hona is incredible. In fact, only beaten by the views by day and night. If you want to get away from it all, this is the place you need.
