About this property

Lochmaddy 7.6 miles. Nestled into the remote countryside of Newton, near Lochmaddy, North Uist, this family holiday cottage surrounds itself with beautiful scenery, perfect for those wishing to explore the landscape through hiking, cycling and wild-swimming. Newly renovated, Machair Cottage boasts an abundance of views across the rugged landscape as you park your car off-road and enter the property.

Welcomed by a spacious sitting area with a tartan rug in keeping with the feel of the highlands, spend a moment reflecting on the adventures of your day with a generous woodburning stove keeping you warm, before making your way over to the kitchen/diner, a spacious area contemporarily decorated and with matching white furniture, this space will inspire any budding chef to whip up a treat for the family, serving it on a presentable glass dining table.

When sleep calls, a large king-size room offers comfort, with a carpeted floor, grey décor, local photographs and ample storage, with touches of purple to catch your eye, creating a wonderful home-from-home space, or there is a second room sporting twin beds, also with grey décor, but this time with the addition of a pleasant pink, allowing for storage and the perfect room for children, along with a family shower room featuring sea blue tiles to remind you that you are only a short drive from any beach.

Be delighted to dine outside on the patio area, overlooking the local bay and surrounding rugged countryside as you plan the day ahead of you.

North Uist has many sandy beaches on offer, all beautiful and remote, providing the perfect place for a family picnic with your four-legged companion, a chance to take to the waves in a kayak or embark on a refreshing seaside walk, feeling the salty breeze in your hair. The nearby town of Lochmaddy will be the perfect stop when you require a cooked dinner at one of the local pubs and restaurants, whilst taking in the beautiful seaport that can provide a ferry over to the mainland. You can also take a day trip down to South Uist, through Benbecula, where there is a variety of stunning sandy beaches and amazing wildlife just waiting for you to explore. You may also be able to enjoy the machair flowers scattered across the island in the spring and summer, the cottages namesake and a beautiful sight for any guest.

Lose yourself in the wilderness of North Uist with a stay at Machair Cottage. The islands can be reached by flights from Edinburgh, Glasgow or Inverness; or by ferry from Uig on Skye to Lochmaddy, or Oban to Lochboisdale.

The village of Lochmaddy is the terminus for the daily ferry linking it to Uig on the Isle of Skye and it is also the main centre of population for the island of North Uist. Lochmaddy has good facilities and services including a selection of hotels serving fresh local produce in their dining rooms. A visit to the award-winning museum and arts centre located in the centre of Lochmaddy is a must, and there is also a tourist office full of information about local events and places to visit. The road south of Lochmaddy will lead you to the village of Carinish some 10 miles away and if you continue on this road you can cross the causeway to the island of Benbecula. We were out and about every day. We come to uist every 6 months to visit friends. Due to my daughter aged 34 having MND, the property will not be suitable in future re step, glass tables and glass shower cubicle. We took her hospital table over, as glass is a no no and also suitable none breakable crockery for her. Due to price re property, wold be nice to have a few treats ie, shower gel, shampoo, fire wood etc Regards Linda Gregg

Good sized property with good amenities. Secure gated garden ideal for letting the dog roam and plenty of off road parking. Excellent views of the local hillsides and moorland and only a short walk to the shore at Newton Ferry. Plenty of wildlife to see in the air, in the water and on land. Good communications with the owners, Donald & Caroline. Very quiet and peaceful, combined with a comfortable bed made for repeated great nights sleeping, essential when recovering from long walks. Kitchen was fully equipped and a good size so food prep was easy. Log burner got the lounge toasty within 20 mins or so. Washer & Drier along with washing line perfect for getting gear cleaned ready for another adventure. Shower room was good size and water pressure great for a rejuvenating freshen up. Could easily recommend and would return. Thank You.
