Surrounding the cottage, the Harris Hills offer a challenging yet rewarding hike through the countryside, whilst the local bay is perfect for wild swimming, wind surfing and kayaking, or you can relax on the soft sand with a picnic and a book. Further from the cottage, you will find the town of Tarbert, where you will be able to stock up on essentials at the local store, as well as try out local produce in one of the cafes, pubs and restaurants after a morning spent at the Tarbert Eagle Observatory. Tarbert also offers a variety of shops selling local craft, including Harris Tweed and Knitwear. Further afield you will find historical sites such as the unmissable Calanais Standing Stones as well as the town of Stornoway, offering a museum, Tesco superstore, and ferries across to the mainland. Built around an inlet on Loch Fyne, Tarbert has long been both a harbour and a key strategic point in the history of Scotland's rugged West Coast. Tarbert once required three castles to protect it, and the ruins of one of these can still be visited today. There are many annual events to interest all tastes including the sailing regatta on Loch Fyne, seafood and music festivals. The 87 mile Kintyre Way stretches from Tarbert to the south of the Kintyre Peninsula, and offers walking for all levels and with ferry connections to Islay and Arran, there is simply no better location to relax and explore this rugged and picturesque part of Scotland.
