The Old Sorting Office is a well-received cottage, praised for its comfort, cleanliness, and secure garden. Guests enjoy the hot tub and appreciate the property's proximity to local attractions and walks. The cottage's thoughtful touches, such as Welsh cakes and Bara Brith, contribute to its homely feel. While some minor maintenance issues are noted, the overall experience is highly regarded, with many guests eager to return.
Guests consistently mention the cottage's cleanliness, describing it as 'extremely clean' and 'very well maintained', indicating a high standard of cleanliness throughout the property.
The location is frequently praised for being central, perfect for local attractions, and offering lovely walks. Its proximity to good pubs and a farm shop adds to the appeal.
The cottage is described as comfortable, cosy, and homely, with a secure garden for dogs. However, one guest found the mattress too soft, and another mentioned overly chlorinated hot tub water.
Facilities like the hot tub and well-equipped kitchen are appreciated, but some guests noted issues with parking, unsafe stairs for dogs, and the need for minor repairs, which slightly lowers the score.
Guests are delighted by thoughtful touches such as provided treats, although it's important to note that such gifts are a kind gesture and may not be guaranteed with every stay.
The Old Sorting Office is a well-presented holiday home located in the lovely village of Hawarden in Flintshire. Tucked away behind a post office, this property is perfectly situated for a romantic retreat while giving couples easy access to the village centre and amenities. Walk into a spacious open-plan living space where you'll find a sitting area with a beautiful feature fireplace you can sit by as you watch your favourite shows on the Smart TV, cook up delicious meals to enjoy dinner dates in the dining area, then let the food settle with a warm soak in the hot tub where you'll get lost in deep conversations and gaze up at the stars. As the day winds down, take a rinse or a bath in the bathroom, then slip under the freshly-washed linens of a double bed to catch your rest. Head out to the village shop next door to stock up on your groceries and essentials, and if you don't feel like cooking, walk across the road to the Fox & Grapes or The Glynn Arms pub for a hearty meal. In the quaint village of Hawarden you'll also be able to visit the beautiful ruins of Hawarden Old Castle and take a walk around the stunning woodlands of Hawarden Estate. Book yourself an afternoon tea or lunch at the world famous Gladstone Library a short walk away from the post office or if you fancy a longer stroll pop down to Hawarden Estate Farm Shop and enjoy the very many delights they have to offer. Further afield, catch a bus for a short journey to the wonderful walled city of Chester where you can visit the beautiful Chester Cathedral, if you're lucky enough too, catch the races at Chester Racecourse - the oldest racecourse in the world - have a picnic in the verdant and blooming Grosvenor Park, and end the day with a trip to the new Chester Market. The Old Sorting Office is the perfect base for your next couple's retreat.
The former Saxon settlement of Hawarden sits on the Anglo-Welsh border, just seven miles west of Chester, and is steeped in history. Home to three castles, including a 13th century roundhouse ruin, as well as an 18th century manor, where part of the grounds are available to the public to enjoy with a pretty walk through Bilberry Wood. A third romantic keep can be seen at nearby Ewloe, hidden amongst the trees in the attractive estate of St David’s Park, and is well worth as visit. During the 19th century Hawarden was a thriving market town and many traces of its history can still be seen in the architecture along the main street, which today offers a selection of amenities including cafes and pubs. Hawarden Airport is in nearby Broughton, home of Airbus, where you can sometimes see the mighty Beluga aircraft taking off across the Cheshire Plain. With excellent access to Chester and the North Wales coast, Hawarden is an ideal base for exploring the many delights on offer in the region.

It was an ideal base for a short break. Everything was as described in the listing. The welcome basket of treats from the hosts was great. Weâd happily book again, if we are back in the area.

The cottage was so homely and comfortable with everything we needed, including Welsh cakes and barra brith! The hot tub was great as was the secure garden for our dogs. Wonderful walks on our doorstep, and a fabulously warm welcome at the Fox and Grapes across the road where they serve delicious meals and lovely cold beer. We'll definitely be back.
